I need some advice, this past week we had a terrible snow storm that gave us really cold temps and ice. Some idiot chose to discard kittens at my grandmothers home. Sadly, this is the fourth time this year alone so I think it is the same individual.
The first night my grandma new something was out there it was icing, windy, and below freezing. She heard a kitten crying outside in the middle of the night and went out to see where it was. He or she was snuggled up against her door covered in snow. She tried to get it and it ran, so she looked around for awhile until she got too cold herself. We put out insulated shelters, food, and have been looking for days.
Two days ago my uncle came to visit and noticed a kitten in the shelter on the porch so he brought him inside, hours later we caught a black female we believe to be his mother.
The kitten is about 8 weeks old, he's old enough to be weaned. His eyes have changed from blue to green and he has sharp teeth. The mother appears to be under a year herself, a beautiful black kitty with semi long hair. She's not too skinny, but you can easily feel the bones in her back and hips. She has milk, but her belly is also pretty large. It's solid when you feel it, not like a typical fat cat belly and its not like the pot belly cats with worms have. I can sometimes feel small lumps when I rub my hands across, and sometimes we feel bubbles.
We are getting her to the vet, but an appointment cannot be made until after the holidays due to their days being pretty full. She eats a lot! She's pooping normally, and peeing too.
My question though...is could I just be feeling her intestines when she is working up the need to use the litter box? The lumps are up near her ribs and sometimes down her belly. I've never had a cat with a kitten become pregnant -I've never bred an animal. Someone told me that six weeks after birth a cat can get pregnant, another said 9. Vet says its possible.

We are working on catching any of the rest, if there are any at all. We have traps set, not at night though, and they are monitored. The kitten eats on his own, but still goes to mama to get his fix.

Oh, some cats gets in new heat already 7-10 days after delivery.  Quite a few goes into heat shortly after that.

So they dont need any whole 6 weeks-9 weeks.

Unlike with human women, nursing doesnt not protect them from new pregnancy, or at best, the protection is much weaker. (and ewen with women, its no 100% sure protection)

Im no expert on palpation, so I wont give you any authorative answer on exactly what you are feeling, but I can say quite confidently  there was more than enough time for conception, and new fetuses to begin to grow  and be palpatable  even by an unexperienced person.

I understand she is quite friendly as she lets you palpate her time and again.

Tx a lot for you and your relatives for such a warmhearted caring!

Good luck!

A queen can go into heat quite soon after giving birth so it could be that she is pregnant again. If you estimate that the kitten is approx 8 weeks old then it's possible that the queen is 6/7 weeks pregnant again. Please try and keep her inside so that you can keep an eye on her and if she is pregnant then the babies would be born inside and then you could contain them so that she can then be neutered after giving birth. Good luck
