Wow, it's only been a short while since I registered here for a benign reason and here I am having issues.

My female tabby is 4.5 years old, otherwise healthy and a former stray I picked up when she was less than a year old. She is spayed and has been since I picked her up (She went through one heat cycle and off to the vet she went!).

She is a stereotypical "Cat", she's not very needy (or kneady) unless the mood strikes but she'll spend time around/with you or sleeps on the bed morning noon and night. She's always been a bit fussy about petting, being picked up or playing with the other cats. She's loud and likes to complain. In May I had a few guests and she was none too impressed and started a cycle of every now and then (Weeks, days, months) peeing on the bathroom rug or my clothes that are in the bathroom. It was a full load, no blood present, no other changes in her aside from knowing she was in trouble.

Last night, right in front of me she went down to squat on something I had on the floor. She's ballsy, but she's never done this in the living room (ALWAYS the bathroom, ALWAYS the rug). I grabbed her up and put her in the bathroom with the litter box and no rugs. As far as I could tell she didn't use the box and I let her out. I went out to petsmart to get a pheromone disperser. My kitten appears to be teething, and he's being a little nightmare especially to her. My big boy has been protecting my tabby and putting the kitten in his place when he feels like intervening. I figured she was doing this to let me know she's stressed and unhappy.

So, I put the rugs in the bathroom as they were being washed. This morning I went in the bathroom and there were three small spots on one, one small spot on the second. I could only see these spots UNDER the rug. These are not her normal "I'm peeing to pee" spots and two had a blood tinge on the top fibers. One was recent enough to be wiped up to confirm that it was pinkish on a white paper towel. I'm almost certain it's her because of her behavior. She's hiding, doesn't want me to touch her but she is still eating her wet food. She is, if possible, fussier than normal but had to deal with it while I held her grumbly butt and cried this morning.

I am isolating today with one rug in the bathroom and her with run of bedroom/bathroom and the boys with another rug in the living/dining/kitchen area to try and make sure I've got the right cat but...I think I do.

I also had two instances of vomit yesterday, one dry food one wet food. She's my only cat that detests dry food so I don't THINK that was her but after the second I can't be sure. I thought it was my big boy because he sometimes has a sensitive stomach, or runs around like a hellion on a full tummy but now I'm thinking his change in behavior may be due to hers.

So, I figured I would open discussion and see if I can get any advice, tips, similar tales while I wait to confirm which kitty it is and go to the vet.

Hi there,

Blood in the urine could be a symptom of a urinary infection, and the logical thing to do would be to suspect the cat who has been peeing outside the box.  The usual first step with peeing issues is to rule out (or rule in) a blockage or infection.  I would take this cat to the vet straight off.  It also would be helpful from a behavioral point of view, to know exactly how many cats you have, their ages and the order of their acquisition and where she fits in this.

It's possible a moderator may want to move this thread to the behavior forum.  Good luck with this!

She's my first cat
A year later I got Vander (now 13pounds and 3 years) who was 3 months old
In mid October I got skeletor at 2 months from under an overpass. He was neutered last week and has been her baby, she cleans and cuddles him which she never did with Vander.

Pecking order she may be on the bottom. She's small, not playful, super cranky. She keeps to herself but that's how she was when she was an only cat as well. She's being more aloof and acting scared of me. I was able to coax her out this morning with treats so that I could look at her, so she's still food motivated but was not impressed with me doing this.

OK so it sounds like stress from other cats isn't the issue.  When though did the peeing start relative to Skeletor coming back from the vet?  Sometimes resident cats react badly to a cat who has just come back from the vet.  Blood in the urine, if its her, and it still sounds like it is, is a medical issue and needs prompt attention.  Her hiding/aloofness could be a further sign of discomfort.

He was neutered on Wednesday and stopped smelling Vet-Like on Friday (And regained acceptance from Vander). She started this behavior last night so it had been five days. Her added aloofness (She is an aloof kitty) does concern me a lot. She is, above all else, a cat and I can't go a night without her at some point deciding to sit on me. I got a purr out of her yesterday but it was brief and she never came to see me last night. My vet still isn't open yet, so I'm waiting at work to make the call.

My vet was fully booked, they recommended me to another vet and she has an appointment at 11. So not looking forward to this bill, and it sucks not being 100% certain that she's the one with the issue but I'm fairly sure.

It's a really good idea to take her and have her checked.. If it is a UTI it needs to be seen to, and it would explain a lot.

Let us know how you get on.

Definitely sounds like it could be a bladder infection.  Glad to hear you have an appointment to get her checked out.  Keep us posted.

The new vet was good (Although, nose up, my vet is better). Techs were awesome, she's back down to 7.2 pounds after getting a little chunky in 2012 at 8 pounds. She has a UTI, he gave her a steroid shot and I get to give her a dropper of bubblegum flavored amoxicillin twice a day. Oh how she loves that! I'm hoping to see some improvement soon, she's had her third dose now but is still going to every litter box in the house and my bathroom rug. Poor girl.

The vet visit with the medications came out to $75 so if anyone else has a similar situation that's an idea for cost of treatment!

I'm really pleased that you know what is going on and can get your girl well and happy.

I think it's hilarious that the amoxicillin tastes like bubblegum ... No chicken treat flavour then?

That's a really reasonable vet bill by Australian standards.  No idea about the States.

UTI Gone... Unfortunately, it seems she picked up some kitty flu while at the vet and now has a URI. Sniffling, sneezing, eyes running and all that fun!

I'm not liking paying for another vet visit when the vet visit is what made her sicker in the first place. What are the chances that an indoor only kitty, surrounded by indoor only kitties, with an owner who has associated with no other kitties suddenly picking up a viral infection from anywhere else?

My boy Munchie probably has a viral infection, he hasn't been to the vet, nor is he exposed to any other animals other than my own.  My DeeJay however did pick up a bit of a sneeze after visiting the vet hospital.  I do know it can happen.

Thanks for posting your results.  I just had the same thing happen to me and this helped.  Missed the vet today but going to book ASAP.  Cheers!
