This morning, my cat had to undergo dental surgery and three of her teeth had to be taken out due to bad condition that I was unaware of. The effects of the anaesthesia are still present so she's kind of disoriented and she has pretty much lost her appetite for food and water. I can't help but worry but hopefully by tomorrow she'll be feeling better.

I've never experienced anything like this with my cat and I would appreciate it so much if someone could give me some advice on how to handle this and how to give her the best care and comfort?

My cats have always been disoriented, wobbly, and sometimes even aggressive after anesthesia and it would wear off in under 8 hours.....

Sorry your kitty isn't feeling well.
It is normal for a cat to have decreased appetite after surgery; that is a side effect of the anaesthesia and (I presume) the pain meds she was given.
What type of food does she normally eat? I know after I have dental work I want something soft, so tempt her with something like baby food (meat + broth only) or wet food with added water.
What kind of after-care did the vet suggest? And, what (if any) pain meds is she on? Some can cause constipation.

Aww, poor kitty..

I'd keep her warm and safe for the next 24hrs in a quiet place. If you can, make sure there's nothing around that she could hurt herself, or trip over - making sure the floors are clear of bits and bobs! Mainly because she's unsteady on her feet.

I'd not worry about the food & water for a bit, but offer a little now and then to see if she changes her mind. Will probably need soft food if you have it? The drugs may be making her feel sick, but if so, it's normal as the drugs leave her body  - it gets me in the same way! I don't know if your vet mentioned, but only a small amount of food for a bit otherwise it can make them vomit, not nice for kitty who's recovering.

Did you vet give you antibiotics or pain meds?

Good luck and wishing your kitty a speedy recovery :-)

Thank you guys for the advice, she normally eats wet food so I just tried to get her to lick some off of my finger. She did lick some very small amounts then was done. The vet did give her pain meds and shot of antibiotic, and told me to give her antibiotics everyday for the next week.

She went to the litter box and did both #1 and #2 so I guess that's a good sign right?

Also, should I try giving her some water through a syringe or something? I'm guessing she'd be a bit dehydrated right?

I would mostly monitor her for now, be very careful giving water to her. She could aspirate some in to her lungs if she fights you at all, and get pneumonia. Cats usually come through surgeries like this very well, I think you'll see a big difference tomorrow. Just encourage her to drink often. Give her a few extra kisses and some TLC tonight, I'm sure she's scared and confused right now. They always appreciate a little extra warmth too! Good luck, and I'll pray for a speedy recovery.

I tried squeezing a damp cloth around her lips so she could lick it off, just to get some water into her system for now. I've placed a warm blanket around her in the bedroom away from noise and people and she's sleeping peacefully now :)

If any problems arise tomorrow, I'll contact the vet for sure.

Thank you all for the support!
