I took my cats temperature at home. I tried it in the mouth and his butt and his butt gave me a better reading of 104.4. Do I need to take him to the vet? He has been sneezing a lot too. He doesn't have discharge from his eyes or nose but that's a pretty high temp for a cat.

Hi,

Sorry about your poor kitty.

Yes its a high temp and yes he needs a vet, and meds.  Do not give him any OTC meds or any other kind without speaking to a Vet first.  It sounds like he has an upper respiratory infection.  The fever is well above normal.  I hope he's better soon.

Thank you so much for the info. It was really helpful. I will be taking him to the vet when it's not 6:22 AM. Lol.

I also agree that he needs to see the vet.  It's very, very, very common for new kitties to come down with an upper respiratory infection when they get settled into their new home due to all the stress.  Good for you for being in tune with your kitty already!  For future reference, don't do the rectal temp as it can create problems if the kitty protests too much.  You can use an ear thermometer or place a thermometer in the fold of the back leg, next to the hip/tummy.  Either will give you a fairly accurate temp.

I took him to the vet today. Banfield to be exact. You know the one in petsmart? The vet said he has a cold. I also got him a wellness plan/ insurance. He says it's not too serious because when he sneezes the stuff that comes out is clear. He had a normal temp when he went there so I guess he will be fine. I'm still glad I took him to the vet. Thanks for all the help and info everybody. Pray for my little 11m old cat ACE the poor sick kitty.

It's always a good idea to try to let the body fight the infection as it does help the immune system.  The problem with so many rescue cats is that they come into rescue emaciated or malnourished and their little bodies have nothing to fight the infection with.  I say this to say, keep an eye on him.  If you notice the symptoms getting worse, start the antibiotics.  Watch for lack of or no appetite, lethargy, or change in litter box activity.  Also, listen for increased congestion, red eyes, squinty eyes and/or the 3rd eyelid showing, and discolored discharge when sneezing.  Make sure he continues to eat.  If he stops eating, you'll need to syringe feed him some diluted wet food.  Be sure he stays hydrated, too.  Steaming in the bathroom helps alleviate congestion, too.

Well I already started the antibiotics because the doctor told me to. He has started having more congestion. I notice a weird wheezing sound in his nose when he breaths. Also the vet told me to take him in the bathroom when I take a shower because the steam will help him just like you did. Thanks for the advice. He has been sleeping all day. Hope he will get better soon.

Glad to hear you took him to the vet.  Yes the showering thing is really good for cats with respiratory issues.

Ok so...after finding the blood on his paw after he sneezed and started rubbing his nose I took him back to the vet. The vet thinks it's a URI. Also they tested his fecal matter and they found he has tapeworms. I have to give him 4 different medications. Please pray for my kitty Ace that he gets better.

Oh no!  I just had to take my cat back to the humane society clinic because she was sneezing like a crazy thing and mouth breathing (which scared the crap outta me!) and they gave me some antibiotics to give her.  She got better after a couple days of the meds and I hope that yours does too!!  Poor kitty, it breaks your heart to see them miserable.
