My cat is generally a lazy cat who usually would rather eat cat food than go chasing after mice. Of course every now and then he'd catch one for one, but it wasn't his main source. Since the weather change, he's been catching and eating at least 1-2 moles/mice per day, and these are just the ones he SHOWS me. See, he doesn't give me presents because he spent his whole childhood in the wild catching food for survival, so when he does get a mouse, he usually runs and hides to eat it. But lately I've been catching him a LOT more often ripping into a mouse.. and it's bothering me. I know that cats naturally eat mice, but it can't be that good for him. Plus he gets hairballs from eating them. I wish he'd let me toss them but when I get close he runs. So it's kind of a lost cause. Is this healthy?

As this is how feral cats in managed colonies survive, it is healthy for them, unless the rodents have been poisoned and the cat finds them later. The rodents are about 70% water and the rest is protein. The only reason he can hunt these down, is because you are feeding him right. An underfed cat, does not have the stamina needed to be a successful hunter.

Thanks for responding so quickly!! So they don't carry diseases? Or have lice or anything? It kind of grosses me out when one second he'll be eating a mole and then the next he'll com in my house and plop down on my bed, I just keep picturing that mole--eww lol. What's cruel is when he'll catch a mole but instead of eating it, he'll let it run away, then he'll catch it again, then let it run away, etc etc., I guess he's playing/practicing but it just seems so mean..

Cats can get tapeworms from eating rodents- keep your cat wormed (get the pills from your vet) and really, it should be fine. Gross, but fine. Otherwise, keep him inside all the time, so he can't hunt.
