Metronidazole - dosage and duration

Please forgive me if you think I'm spamming with too many threads about the same situation.
I'm just really worried and it's my first time dealing with this. I just moved to a new area and don't know anyone.

Quick question about the dosage of Flagyl for Giardia infection.

Is it given once or twice a day?

My vet told me to give once a day at 1/4 of a 250 mg pill for 5 days. However I read on this forum that 10 days are needed to get rid of it completely.

This is Chase's recurrent episode of Giardia and his foster mom previously treated him with 5 days of Flagyl. I'm concerned that it could be resistant to Flagyl in him (coming from multiple cat household) or he got re-infected.

He is responding to the medication already (3 days) but I just want to be sure.

What are the side effects of it?... Anything that seriously outweighs the benefit?...

He is also on Albon in case he is harboring coccidia.

HEre is the 'standard' dose: 25 mg/kg given every 12 hours for seven days.  My vet prescribes it in a liquid twice a day.  Here you can read about the side effects.  http://www.petmd.com/pet-medication/metronidazole#.Uq0XjLTAERA  I have had many cats on this drug over the years and have never had side effects on it.

My vet prescribed 65 mg once a day. The kitty weighs 3.11 lbs. sounds like it's the correct amount but taken once a day.

Should I split the dosage in two?... Or it doesn't really matter?...

Twice a day is the standard protocal so I would call your vet and ask about this.

Well that's weird...

I'll definitely call him tomorrow and ask. I read that the half life is short, so it would make sense to give it twice a day...
