Hi

I already posted a question about one of my kittens having Giardia infection. I have one concern about disinfecting the carpet.

My girl kitten hasn't even interacted with the sick kitten who is kept in isolation but I'm afraid she could have picked it up via carpet contamination. We have old carpet all over the house and we'd been walking in and out of that bedroom liberally especially the first day or two before we found out what we are dealing with.

Is this possible?....
Did anyone else have a similar situation?...

I want to be on the safe side and give her Flagyl as well for 5 days. Is that enough?... What is the recommended dosage?...

I desperately need advice on how I disinfect the house now having the carpet all over. I can't bleach it right?... I have allergies, so I can't use too many chemicals.
After this is all over we are going to have professional steam cleaning which should get rid of the problem but what do I do now?....

How do I stop re-infection from happening?...

Thank you

Definitely give your vet a call and ask him or her  about the recommended dosage.  I do not recommend giving your other cat anything at all for any length of time at all without speaking to a vet.

As for the carpet, I am not sure what would be effective, but I would not use bleach.  It can be toxic to cats.

Good luck! I am sorry you are going through this with your kitties!

Hi

I would not suggest you start treating the cat who isn't sick.  This is an unpleasant medication that can have side effects and if she isn't infected it won't do anything. An I agree 100% with Tulosai, speak with your vet.

While i think it is technically possible for the other cat to pick it up off the carpet, i think the chances of this are very unlikely unless you actually saw fecal material on the carpet.  If you think you may have stepped in poop in the "Iso" room and then walked on to the carpet, there might be some concern, but if neither of the above is true then i think you're ok.

This is from the CDC (centers for disease control) on how to clean carpet if you suspect giardia contamination:  A link follows:

http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/giardia/giardia-and-pets.html

Carpet / Upholstered Furniture
  • Cleaning
    • Wear gloves.
    • If feces are on a carpet or upholstered furniture, remove them with absorbent material (for example, double layered paper towels).
    • Place and discard the feces in a plastic bag.
    • Clean the contaminated area with regular detergent or carpet cleaning agent.
    • Allow carpet or upholstered furniture to fully dry.
  • Disinfection
    • Wear gloves.
    • Steam clean the area at 158ºF for 5 minutes or 212ºF for 1 minute.
    • QATS are found in some carpet cleaning products and can also be used after cleaning to disinfect. Read the product labels for specifications, and follow all instructions.

Tulosai and stephenq

Thank you both for replying.

My healthy kitten Abby doesn't show any symptoms and the vet told me not to give her anything unless they had been sharing litter box for some time which they hadn't.

As for the carpet I sprayed it with Lysol thoroughly in the isolation room while the kitten was locked up in the bathroom (I put him in the bathtub with the glass door tight and put towels all over the outside of the bathroom door, so nothing would get in). We have an AC vent there too, so it was pretty safe I think.

Then I brushed it with clean water after a couple of hours to get the residue off. Do you think it's enough?...

And in the rest of the house I did the same but with less Lysol. The tiles in the kitchen and the other bathroom I cleaned with bleach solution and rinsed with water twice.

I hope I only have to deal with this once:)

Thank you for support

Did anyone do the steam cleaning of the carpet?  If so, how often did you do it?
