My father & mother in law decided to keep a beautiful stray female cat that had, unknowingly, been living under their back porch.  They named her Sadie.  And all I could tell them was she is definitely a calico but was wondering what the 'official' color markings might be called.  I only have the one photo they were finally able to upload and email us.   They said she is all white except these color patches and the black patch on her back  is just that, a circular patch the size of the one encircling her eye.

She's a beautiful girl.

What a pretty
! I love calicos! Have two now. Wikipedia describes a calico as "...  domestic cat  with a spotted or parti-colored coat that is predominantly white, with patches of two other colors (often the two other colors are orange tabby  and black)."

She's  basically a van-patterned calico.    but ideally that would be without the patch on her back.    so she's really sort of in between a van pattern and a harlequin pattern.

Van pattern is where the cat is all white except the tail and some color on the head or ears.   Harlequin pattern is when they have color those 2 places plus a few more patches on the body

Very pretty cat!

Thanks so much for the replies.  They have never owned a cat and only occasionally pet the beautiful longhair orange tabby girl from next door when she suns on their porch.  They were extremely surprised to find this one living under their huge back deck.   We did tell them to feed wet if possible, but understand kibble since they, like many, are on a fixed income.   My FIL built her a supreme, insulated cat house with a warming light and everything there on the deck.

It totally took all of us off guard, even more so my husband's sons.  The youngest son always wanted a cat as a kid and my husband had always said "no .. I don't know anything about cats and don't think I'd like one."  Of course the boys both flipped out when we rescued Si, saying they could not believe their father owned a cat, much less one he walked on a harness.  LOL   Now their grandfather has a cat (and frankly could not wait to call and tell us they were keeping her) and we have two and my hubby is totally smitten with both boys.

REAL men love cats. Those men that don't are not complete.  I would be very......abrupt....yeah, that's the word, with anyone male or female that tried to even talk nasty to my ladies. Your in-laws have a beautiful cat. A calico is the perfect one to start with. Be sure to acquaint them with the calico Tortitude.
