Technically the woman isn't my neighbor but she visits my neighbor and she takes my cats!

About a month ago one of my kittens crossed the road into my neighbors yard and this woman (we'll call her Pam) ran her over. After she hit my cat Pam came into my yard yelling at me and  gave me a graphic description of my cat after she hit it.  As she was driving away she yelled cuss words at me out the window. Now every time she sees me she glared as me and calls "Here kitty kitty kitty" when I'm not looking at her.

A few days after that two of my kittens turned up missing with no trace of where they went. Today as I was pulling out of my driveway I saw one of these kittens being let out of my neighbors house to use the restroom. I know for a fact it's my cat because it has the same facial markings. I'm now starting to suspect she's responsible for no less than four of my missing cats all of which had unique markings. Two of them had natural bob tails they were a mother and a daughter. Then their were two sisters both with really cool speckle designs (one of these is the kittens I saw). I really want the mother cat back as I found her abandoned as a kitten and nursed her back to health. What kind of actions can I take to get my cats back? I can't just confront Pam because I have no doubt whatever she would resort to physical violence! HELP

I really don't understand this.  Your neighbour whom we are calling Pam hit your cat.  Was your cat injured?  Your neighbour is not Pam is she?  Pam just visits, so your would be able to speak to the neighbour when Pam is not there?

Unless your cats are chipped and or registered (it depends where you are - I'm in Australia so things are different) it seems unlikely that you have any legal way to get your cats back.  May I ask how many cats you have in total?

Perhaps your neighbour is concerned about the cats as they are wandering around and one was hit.  I'm not justifying what she has done, just trying to sort out what is going on.

I think you can go to the law because Pam trespassed into your property and admitted killing your cat. I agree with Mani about talking to your neighbor about Pam. From her you can also have concrete proof that Pam is stealing your cats. And since you believe Pam is capable of violence, the more you should go to the police.

Calling the police may be useful, but only if you have absolute proof that the cats are yours. Are they microchipped? Do you have good clear pictures of their unique markings taken at various ages? It would also be helpful if the pictures also show your home and belongings, not just close-ups of the cats. Do you have vet records and would the staff at the vet's be able to identify the cats if they saw them?

She sounds a bit unbalanced but you have to face some facts here. You let a kitten out... Knowing there was a road there, and your neighbor promptly ran it over.

Sounds like she took your cats away out if fear she'd hit another one. That's why she was yelling in the first place. If she didn't care , she wouldn't have got angry.

If you don't have proof of ownership then you are out of luck. Pet ownership is a lot more about feeding them and calling them yours.

I took a kitten away from a former neighbor after I came home from a trip to find these ignorant people had used my porch to feed "their" cats. They threw whatever on old hoagie wrappers. Or maybe it was a dead kitten. All I know was something was wrapped in foil and tossed under my porch and it smelled dead, and about 15 kittens from 3 different litters were there on and around my porch . All of them were covered with fleas and ticks. The boldest one sat on my foot and demanded dinner. He stYed a week, I set up a box and fed him on my porch. (Was truly not expecting to keep him)during which time my neighbors said nothing. Not. One . Word.

After a week of this, and wriggling in fear every time a car zoomed past, I took him inside and brought him to the vet, got shots and deeormed and antibiotics and fleas and ticks off. The bill was $400 and all I can say is thank god my area has an SPCA with an incredible leader who knew me and had been desperate to save the feral colony in my area (150 cats). Another week goes by--finally the neighbor says something . Sound familiar? All I can say is you might want to contact your local shelter to see if she brought mama cat in. But those kittens didn't deserve to be left out to be run over. I still shudder remembering the kitten pieces I'd see on the streets. Do yourself a favor and apologize to your "crazy" neighbor for putting her in a position of having to hit a defenseless kitten. You can bet she thinks you're "crazy" too. She might yell but know what ? I'd be mad, too, if I ran over a neighbors kitten.

I do apologize for the rant but I had to get this off my chest.

If you are irresponsibly allowing your cats to breed and run loose, there isn't much you can do. If your cat leaves your property, anyone can take it, and you only have a case to get it back if you have proof of ownership. Microchipping, rabies certificates, etc. Maybe they got lucky and she'll take good care of them and keep them inside where they won't get run over.

For instance: OK, in the US cats are considered property. For better or for worse. So say you have some inanimate piece of property, like, oh, a bicycle. You leave your bicycle in your neighbor's yard, and she keeps it. Now you want it back---how will you prove it's yours? Unless your name is on it somewhere or you have it registered with the city, you can't. Same with cats.

:yeah: I couldn't say it any better than that. Hopefully this "neighbor" is just an angel on those cats behalf and is extremely distraught over accidentally running one over. Poor little kittens. :(

I know there are cat DNA tests for lineage purposes. If you are willing to pay, perhaps you can get some of their hair or something and have it tested. That is, if you have another cat in your household of the same lineage or perhaps have some of their hair or some base piece of DNA to compare it with. Kinda like a paternity test for a dead beat parent. Many universities and business' have the service. Might be a bit over board but it is up to you how far you want to take it. Otherwise, all you can really do is have them chipped for ID purposes. Sorry this is happening to you. I must admit, if someone took my Stewie, I would not be so nonconfrontational about it.
