Mine just died..

I have really limited space and am considering getting a 'fridge only' and a separate small drawer freezer in the laundry, or a really tall combination with the freezer on the bottom, in the kitchen only.  I don't want just a basic freezer that you get at the top of the fridge as it's what holds me back from DIY cat food.

Not sure whether a chest freezer is the way to go either.  I've never had a larger freezer than the one that normally comes with a basic fridge.

I've been going around in circles trying to make up my mind, so thought I'd throw it out to everyone.  Width is an issue.. I only have 600cm max width, with the option of putting a freezer somewhere else.

Suggestions, ideas and experiences gratefully accepted..

From the homemade food perspective, I'm glad that I have a separate deep freezer. It stays out in my glassed-in porch. It really reduces costs to buy meat on sale and freeze until time to make food. My side-by-side wouldn't hold enough raw and my own food, but I must have an ice maker...I've lived without one before and never again!

I don't know how much you prepare food ahead of time and freeze it. But there is simply no way I could ever be without a deep freezer. It helps when foods are on sale. It helps me keep within my grocery budget. I will buy a whole chicken and cut it myself. I can buy larger quantities of meat and divide it into meal-size portions. I can make pasta sauces, soups, and stews, and divide it up and throw it in the freezer. Then, on really busy nights, we don't have to deal with take-out and restaurants. You throw a container of pasta sauce in the microwave, make some pasta, do a quick salad, and you have dinner....in less time than it takes for pizza delivery and that saves money, too. We also have a large garden and the freezer helps with our veggies. We keep our freezers in the basement.

If you get a fridge/freezer, I agree about the freezer being on the bottom. I think, but am not sure, you get a larger freezer that way. Maybe it's just the design that makes it appear larger.

Can't say much about the ice maker as I haven't had one for a long period of time yet.....I'm still a little leery of ours.

I couldn't live without our chest freezer. We have a smallish fridge with a freezer on top, and it's simply not enough for the cooking I do. Like Pam, I always freeze a lot of meals so we have them on hand for busy days, and buy meat on sale.
If you're limited on space and just want the one, then I would go for the freezer drawer on the bottom.

This is the one I'm thinking of.  The only concern I have is that I'm really short (just over 5 foot) and will probably have to stand on my tippy toes to reach the top shelf!

That's what stools are for!
