My 1 year old cat Effy had a litter of nine kittens about 4 months ago. Only one of the kittens survived, but he's healthy and growing fast. The problem is, he's still nursing. He eats solid food like our adult cats, but the momma cat still lets him nurse. We had her spayed but that doesn't seem to stop her from nursing the kitten. The momma cat is going to a new home soon, so I'd really like to get the kitten to stop nursing before she leaves. Any advice?

The only answer is to seperate them for a week or so.

Otherwise he will continue for an indefinite time, as long as she allows it.

Kudos for having her spayed :))

9 kittens, wow...........surely that is why only one survived. Large litters make smaller kittens.

My boy was a tubby baby, getting all the cream at momma's milk bar as he was an only kitten (it runs in his momma's family).  He had a lovely, tollerant, patient momma who continued to let him have the odd suckle right up to when I adopted him at around15 weeks.  Spoiled rotten!  He was fine when I stole him away and they were seperated at that point.  I think catwoman is right, they will both be fine if you separate them now and give his mom a chance to settle before she goes to her new home. I think Mouse's mom let out a huge sigh of relief when he was packed in to his little crate.
Effy will probably do the same if you give her a nice quiet space away from her boy.

Your kitten should be a lovely secure little boy having had access to and attention from Effy for this long.  He is a very lucky little boy.

I kept a mama cat and one of her sons, and she let him nurse for nearly a year (he's twice her size, too! :lol3:). Even after she was spayed. So as long as nobody's getting hurt it's fine. And I don't think it will cause any problems to separate them now. He doesn't NEED to nurse; he's just doing it because he can. Once he can't I don't think he'll have any ill effects, except for the normal missing his mama after she's gone.

Mouse missed his momma to start with when I adopted him, but when I chatted with the famiily I got him from his mom missed him like a bad itch!  Poor baby.

We've all read about obnoxious kids undisciplined and breastfed way after most kids have stopped. I've read of a woman who's 8 year old son of course just goes to her wherever they might be and will just start having his suckle in front of her friends. His friends. What sort of Man will he grow up to be.
Gosh I hope I haven't trod on any toes here.
Now I have whisky and blighty. 2 males. Soon after blighty came and settled st home and with whisky I noticed blighty was suckling from whisky with complete permission from the empty milk bar. Blighty purred and sucked away and whisky washed him. Now he's 5 months he's practically stopped. Sometimes he wants and does a little but whisky only gives him a few minutes and then moves. Blighty seems fine so eventually he'll stop.
Actually what amazed me was how whisky behaved. He lay on his side like a mama would.
With kitties it's a lot to do with mum. If she didn't want to she'd soon send herooff with a flea in her ear.
