Hello all. The cats in our house herded me here. I am so glad they did.
If I can follow the tutorial I will post kitten pictures in that thread.

Thanks to you folks I think we have a start on helping Domino with his herpes.
My niece is a vet tech. I asked her about Dommie's crusty nose. We thought he might have a food allergy. She said he most likely has herpes as it is common in shelter cats.

2 and a half years ago our beloved 18 year old senior cat Pippi passed. We were heart broken, and vowed we would wait to get another cat. That lasted all of 2 weeks. We couldn't take it and had a family rendezvous at Paws Cat City. We found our adorable Lillianna Underfoot and took her home.

Lilly is a very self contained cat. It was also apparent that she had no cat interaction training. She went from fosterage, to spaying, and then to us. She was turned in to Paws at about 3 weeks. She was terrified of other kittens when we tried play dates. She didn't understand that biting and clawing hurt. We guess that she had no sibs or mamma to teach her this. She has a kinked tail which I assumed was congenital, as I've known plenty of kitties born that way. We came to wonder if it might have been some kind of accident as she exhibits signs of post traumatic stress syndrome. We love her, and accept her as she is.

But after a while it was apparent that she was not going to be a major snuggle bug. And, 1 cat is spread pretty thin with 3 cat lovers in the house. We discussed getting another cat when Lilly was a little settled. She was an incredibly active kitten and we worried that she would accidentally hurt another cat.

Our close friends foster kittens for the Homeward shelter in Woodinville. We have visited and enjoyed many a batch of kittens. We considered several, but none caught all our fancy solidly enough to make it happen.

Then we got the photo in the mail....We has kittens....

Now what kittens aren't adorable? But these guys were calendar cats!!! On our first visit we were captivated. We visited them during their fosterage and picked them up after they were neutered. They are the most bonded sibs I have seen, so their foster mamma was glad they were staying together.

Imagine our surprise when we took them home and Lilly was terrified of them! It is pretty strange to see a full grown cat act afraid of a 2 pound kitten...

It has been 6 months and Lilly has slowly adjusted to the point where she will actively engage them in play. She still gets stressed if they both crowd her, or startle her, and she still doesn't understand that touching noses is a cat greeting. She is likely to swat when the boys do normal cat things. Fortunately the boys are easy going and not put off by her irrational behavior.

Shortly after we brought them home Dommie developed a crusty nose. The vet said if he doesn't sneeze or get yellow or green mucus, it was't really a worry and would probably pass. But it didn't. My niece says he probably got it when he went back to the shelter to be neutered. So, after reading the information here we have started all three on Lysine. After 2 days, my partners think his nose is starting to look better already. Thank you all so much for sharing the info to help me get him sorted out!!!

Great story.  We did the same--lost our beautiful 17-1/2 old baby and I didn't think I could bear to go through that again so I wasn't going to get any more cats....three weeks later we brought home two 3-month old siblings from the SPCA.  LOL

Welcome!
