Hi all! I'm taking my Bowie in for his vaccinations tomorrow. He is 7 years old and completely indoor. I haven't given him any vaccines since he was a kitten (he got all his kitten vaccines) because everything I've read on the Internet terrified me into deciding against them. Although it is illegal to not get the rabies vaccine in PA, I avoided it. Now I have decided that it is time to get the rabies. I'm going to demand only the Purevax by Merial, as it is the only non-adjuvanted rabies vac there is (that's what I've read). Also, do you think it's necessary to get the distemper? Are there any more vaccines I should be okay with giving him? I'm very nervous about sarcomas. And I know my vet will be trying to convince me to give him more.

Here he is, enjoying the sun!:

Since he is seven, an indoor cat, and had the kitten shots then I think you can get him just the rabies.  Distemper is almost always found in kittens and young cats, I think at age 7 he should be okay.

Do you know how old your cat was when he got his last set of kitten shots?  If over 16 weeks he probably does not need a booster on the Distemper, if he was under 16 weeks it is recommended to have at least 1 booster.  You can read more about it here: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=vaccines

I've decided to cancel the appointment. I called and asked if they carry Purevax rabies vaccine and they don't and won't because they have to buy a whole tray. So I'm looking elsewhere.

When I called for Purevax I found it mainly at holistic or integrated vets or in upscale places. The only exception was city animal clinics held in parks. But that's because our city requires the rabies shot and is trying to provide safer alternatives.

My vet carries it and she is at a cats only clinic.  I guess they would be considered upscale their fees are a little higher than average and it is in one of the wealthier areas.  Their fees are higher but not as high as the holistic vet in this area.
