My Fozzy is about 6 years old and has been struggling with Megacolon. He takes cisipride twice a day, 3ml of lactulose 2-3 times a day and sometimes Miralax twice a day but he still keeps getting backed up. He has been to the vet many times to get enemas and manual cleaned out. He has been backup up for a few days and did his usual of just laying on the bed. Not getting up to eat, drink or use the box. I could not afford another vet bill since I have already racked up a very large amount so I gave him Pet-Enema and now he seems worse! He has been vomiting, wont drink or at and still has not pooped. He keeps straining but nothings comes up. I have been trying to give him water through a dropper but since he keeps vomiting I don't know if it is doing any good. I Just don't know what to do to make him better :(

Your cat is impacted. Any possible way you can give him another enema? Even dawn (unscented or original) with warm water *or* liquid glycerin in a syringe and used as an enema might help. (I've had to do the same with my son in the past before his GI finally placed him on prescription laxatives...ironically he takes miralax as well!)

When giving an enema you have to be very gentle and make sure to not force the syringe (or enema bottle if that's what you're using) into the anus or too far and you can damage their sphincter or tear their colon lining.

I understand not having the funds to take in your cat, but I still suggest at least calling the vet as an impaction can be extrememly dangerous. A ruptured colon can result in sepsis.

Good luck and please keep us informed :(

Thank you for the response! I have done enemas in the past with warm soapy water with minimal luck. IT is hard to keep him still since he is so large and I am afraid of making him more sick by giving him another enema. Can another one make it worse?

Thanks!

It shouldn't as enemas tend to just flush the first part of the colon. However repeated enemas can give your cat a sore bum. It may take a few tries to get him to "go".

Keep an eye out for a bloated belly or signs of dehydration (dry mouth, loose skin, lethargy, and possibly white gums).

Hope your little one is better soon! My cat doesn't have Megacolon but needed two enemas under general anaesthetic during the summer as she was so badly impacted. Lactulose didn't really work and getting it into her was almost impossible. She was getting more and more stressed so took advice and started her on Miralax. Since then she's been brilliant with regular, normal stools. Fingers crossed it keeps doing its work! Good luck with your cat and let us know how you get on.

I just wanted to give an Update on Fozzy. I was not able to get him into his regular vet so we went to another vet in town where they did an enema on him and got some of it out. I brought him home but two days later he was still straining, not eating or drinking, drooling and just not feeling well. So we went back to the vet where they did an x ray and showed that he had a major blockage past his pelvic area. They did sedation, manual extraction and an enema. They also gave him a shot for nausea. I brought him home and he was feeling better and eating. Two days later the same thing. THis time I brought him back to his regular vet where there was no choice but to sedate him again, he had an enema, manual extraction and another enema. She was able to get out the blockage. I brought him home where he was still obviously not feeling well, it had been a stressful week. This was last night. He was snuggling with me on the bed and farted, except it wasn't a fart :) He pooped out the last of his block and some diarrhea. He was unable to control his bowels last night, it just kept pouring out. It was green, I don't know what that means. I've never been more happier for a cat to poop all over the place :) !! This morning he is still not feeling to well, again understandably. He is leaking somewhat still, but its more just a watery liquid now. But he is resting so I hope he feels better soon. The prognosis for the future though isn't good. Since this is the 8th enema since the summer, along with 3 manual extractions it is recommended that I put him to sleep if it happens again. The vet said that his colon is so stretched out that he just cannot push it out anymore. She said he looks older, his coat is looking rough and he just looks not like him self. I don't want him to suffer, it is just hard to think about losing him. He is getting his medicine three times a day now (3ML of Lactulose, A Half Cap of Mira-Lax and a Cisipride) to keep his stools at a runny state since he cannot pass it otherwise. I just don't know what to do, I am so sad for him and the thought of him dieing.

How old is your fur baby? If he's not too old surely a colon removal op could be considered? It's pretty major surgery though if he's in advanced years. I'm really praying for him as I understand what having a cat with bowel problems is like! Keep us up to date!

I'm not sure what a half-cap of Miralax actually equates to, but cats do get accustomed to Miralax and it has to be increased over time. Can you try to increase the Miralax? Also, have you talked to the vet about doing sub-q fluids at home to keep his system flushed and hydrated? What does he eat?

I'm so sorry you're going through this.
