Hello Everyone! Happy Tuesday!

What was your very first job?

Unofficially, starting at 11 years old, I had a little mini business as a dog walker and pet sitter. My first official job was at Subway at the age of 16.

I did a bit of babysitting as a younger teen; but not too much.  My first paycheck kind of job was Dairy Queen.  I don't even like ice cream that much.  Every now and then I'll get a taste for it; but it's never my first pick for desserts.  Actually; the smell of ice cream and grease still turns my stomach.  I came home every night smelling like that.

Other than babysitting and occasionally doing some filing for my mom's boss, my first "real job" was as a short-order cook at a swim club when I was 14.

Well, babysitting I guess doesn't really count.

First job with a paycheck was with Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.  It was after I graduated from high school.  The summer the Lightening Loops opened (I bet it's long gone now, maybe not - I haven't been in years).  It was a great job, not too difficult (I ran one of the arcade games), out of the sum (because, I ran an arcade game lol), fun people, decent hours.  I'm sure the wages were terrible, minimum for sure, but I probably didn't care at that point in my life.

Babysitting as a younger teen for a teacher and his wife. They both worked for the school system so it was pretty steady work, 2 weeks at the beginning of the summer and 2 weeks at the end of the summer. Friday nights during the fall, he was an assistant coach for the h.s. football team, along with teacher work days.

My first job with a paycheck with tax deductions was at 16 at a Big Boys restrauant.Started as a greeter and by the timeI left had been a waitress.

I was a dishwasher in a small cafe. I worked there from grade 9 until after I graduated high school 4 years later.

I did babysitting while I was in high school.  My first regular paycheck job was as a nurse's aide in a nursing home.  That was before they started requiring certification.  It was only for the summer between high school and college and I made the decision within the first week that wasn't something I would want to do for very long.

I worked off the back of a dry cleaning truck that parked on a military base every day. I was taking in laundry and cleaning from lots of good looking guys in uniform.

Looks like baby sitting was all of our first "jobs". After that, in my senior year of high school they had a program for students who took commercial courses (steno, typing. etc.), where we worked part time after school for Montgomery Wards. It was expected that once we graduated high school we would continue there, but most of us found other jobs. It was my first expereince working in a "real" office, and lead to my secretarial jobs after that. Guess I'm dating myself, I don't think they really have the old fashioned secretary anymore, the kind that took shorthand. I always excelled in that and won state awards for Pitman shorthand. No such thing anymore!

I did admin at a publishing house. Sometimes we collated books. 30 years later I make in-house marketing collateral. And at times that means I collate books.

In the kitchen
My first job was as a kitchen slave at the hospital, after school and on weekends. It was about 3 hours a day, 4-7 pm. We took the dinner carts to the various floors in the hospital. After all the patients had their dinner, we collected the carts, brought them back to the kitchen, and then ran everything through the large dishwasher machine.

(My dad worked in the Maintenance Dept; when I turned 14, he got the job for me. I think I stayed there for about 2 years anyway, probably until right before I had our son. I know I got married while working there yet, and I remember Rick taking me to work and then picking me up again after work. I never got my drivers license until I was around 18-19 years old.)

Story....my GF and I were in the elevator, we had to take dinner trays up to some new admissions and we were on the way back to the kitchen. There was a nurse in the elevator with us. Deb and I were complaining bitterly about our shorthand teacher in school, what a witch the woman was and how much we couldn't stand the class. You know how it is with kids. And this teacher was a real winner. The nurse listened to us, but didn't say a word. When we hit the main floor and the doors opened, she said, "Your shorthand teacher? Is my mother." And then she walked out. Oops. Bad move, really bad move. The next day, we went looking for her and apologized for our comments. She thanked us and told us that she knew kids were kids. But she said she appreciated us apologizing to her. I felt so bad about it. And obviously I still remember the whole incident.
