Yes, it's that time again....time to make the cookies.

My sister and niece and I are doing a small cookie exchange. My niece loves my snickerdoodles and Mom's gingersnaps, so she's asked me to make them for the three of us: sister, niece, and for here at home. My sister is making two kinds of cookies and so is my niece; I'm not sure what they're making yet. (Somebody mentioned Kiss Cookies and Oatmeal Cookies, but I'm not sure.) We each got matching buckets to put our cookies in and we will swap cookie buckets this coming weekend. I'm going to make my snickerdoodle and gingersnap doughs tonight and will bake cookies on Tuesday night after work.

In addition to the snickerdoodles and the gingersnaps, other cookies on my list include:

Snickerdoodles (just for Rick....you don't think I'm going to get away with only one batch of snickerdoodles, do you?
)

Chocolate Chip cookies

Cinnamon-Brown Sugar Biscotti

Cranberry-Orange Biscotti

Chocolate Crinkles

Drop Sugar Cookies

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunkers

Molasses Crinkles

Sour Cream Cut-out cookies (I thought I'd take these down to the grandchildren and we can decorate them together)

Killer Toffee Bars

In addition, I want to make Almond Brittle and Dark Chocolate Butter Crunch. I may make some marshmallows for hot chocolate, too. Honestly, once you've eaten a homemade marshmallow, you will never buy them from the store again. I swear. (I made some last year for hot chocolate and my sister happened to be there when I was cutting the marshmallows out. Then I rolled some in cocoa. And she sat there munching away very happily.)

My normal Christmas cookie assortment is:

Chocolate Chip

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip

Peanut Butter Blossoms

Chocolate Chip Treasure Cookies

(Do you see a trend here??)

Coconut Oatmeal Cookies (for my brother)

Oatmeal "Rocks" (for my dad)

Chips Galore Cookies

Cowboy Cookies

Oatmeal Cranberry Chocolate Spice Cookies

I don't make all of them every year, except for the Chocolate Chips because they're my favorites.  I used to make some each week and take them to work for us to enjoy.  Not sure what I'll do this year because I've got a new job.

I have to finish up with the white fruitcake. Happily, this year I found a great source for candied lemon peel and orange peel (even though diced - I think the whole peel is a thing of the past.) Candied cherries. And - Ta da! - beautiful, pale green citron melon in thick halves. Candied, that is glace pineapple, is unavailable, and I looked from coast to coast. My son found candied, as in sugared, semi-dried at a whole foods type store. So I've been cutting it then soaking in brandy for 36 hours, as I do the dark and light raisins and currants.

Then come the lebkuchen and springerle. If I get to Costco for more almonds, Swedish cardamom almond cookies, which are an icebox cookie that are easy to slice and bake when I have some time. Ditto pinwheel cookies.

And I'll see what else comes to mind as we slide down December to the festive year's end.

I hadn't heard of sour cream cutouts.  I've made cream cheese cutouts and I much prefer those to regular sugar cookies.

I don't bake much for Christmas anymore.  I used to always make the cream cheese cutouts, butter cookies, rugelach and kolachi.

Catapault, I wish Dark Mavis was around....she made the best candied orange peel. It was just delicious. And very habit-forming, too. I tried lebkuchen years ago and they were good. Do you have the rolling pin for springerle cookies? If you live close to a Trader Joe's, they have raw almonds, too, and they're really good. I use them in my almond brittle.

I've been making sour cream cut-out cookies for years now...the recipe came from an old McCall's cookbook from back around the very early '70s. Like the cream cheese cookies, they're better than regular sugar cookies.

I've been thinking of making kolachi.....have never made them before.

Thanks for the reply Winchester. I have candied orange peel (strips candied, rolled in sugar, dipped in dark chocolate - yumm!) But I need about 2 pounds and that's a lot of candying.

I do indeed have a springerle rolling pin. My mother-in-law, may she rest in piece, got it for me. I find I appreciate her many kindnesses to me even more, today, than I did at the time. I like anise, and these cookies are the best, with a cup of good coffee to dunk them in.

We live in the boondocks of western New Jersey, literally just a couple of miles from the Delaware River. I need to drive 10 - 15 miles just to get to a big supermarket. Am hoping my friend with a Costco membership will be making a run there soon (and that's a better than 30 mile one way trip.)

But there's an apiary not far away, so I get excellent local honey for my lebkuchen. And there are lots of bottom-of-the-driveway eggs for sale, from pastured chickens. So there are compensations for living off in the woods.

All this stuff sounds great. I am eating gluten free and so far I have only learned how to cook plain cookies. I have decorated them with cinnamon and also with red and green sprinkles. They made a great substitute for vanilla wafers when I made a banana pudding.

I need to get my list together.  I always say I'm going to go simple and never do.  Plus now I have to put my new mixer to use and get a good feel for it!

My list so far:

Italian Chocolate Chip

Tea Tassies

Spiced Sugar Cookies (soooo yummy!)

Oatmeal Raisin with chocolate chips (DH's request, not really a Christmas cookie to me)

No-bake Butterscoch/Chocolate Crunchies
