I went out of town and my husband left the door open while doing renovation work and the cat got out. I didn't get home until she had been missing for 1.5 days. I've walked the neighborhood day and night shaking treats and calling her. It has been four days now and I've flyered the neighborhood, talked to neighbors, got a pet amber alert to notify 500 other neighbors, covered the perimeter of my house in old litter and salmon juice. I have a cat trap set in the backyard baited with wet food and salmon. No one has seen a glimpse of her and it's like she's disappeared into thin air! I am feeling hopeless that I will ever get her back and seriously considering hiring a pet detective. Please help - any tips on finding her?

They are quite often nearby and laying really low.  I had a cat go missing many years ago and she was under a bush in a neighbour's yard half a block away.

Don't presume that she will come to you, even with treats.  You really have to search.

It's great to do all the flyers etc.  It means that is someone has taken her they're less likely to hold onto her knowing she's so well known.

The trap is also an excellent idea.

Here's an article that may be of help:  http://www.missingpetpartnership.org/recovery-displacedcat.php

I really feel for you and hope you find her very soon..

My cat went missing for five days about two years ago. Every day I wandered outside looking for him and calling his name. We also put up flyers all around the neighborhood and houses we knew fed stray cats. I put out used blankets that he loved to sit on and sprinkled some kitty litter around the house. After about five days I was out telling his name and finally heard a faint meow. He was hiding in the middle of a big bush in my neighbors yard! He was super skinny so we took him to the vet but he checked out okay, just had to eat a lot.

Check the local animal shelters for her and check online you can look in the area for any cats that had been picked up. So far it sounds like youve got a lot covered. Good luck with everything!

You can also send flyers to vets in your area, and ask them to post them, in case someone took her in, and takes her to a vet. I also agree with notifying shelters and rescue organizations in your area.

Years ago, went to a horse show in May, for 3 days, when I came home, she was gone. I looked and looked, walked the roads, walked the pastures, told neighbors....nothing.  In late September, I was riding in one of the far back pastures, and I heard this meow, hers was very distinctive, I knew it was her. I called her and she came to me. I tried putting her on the horse, she got down, I tried carrying her on the horse, she got down. I was pretty far out. So since she saw me first, and called to me, I walked the horse back, and she followed me, all the way back.

She was missing for 5 months, I have no idea what happened to her, or how she survived, but she found her way back to me.  Never give up.  (((((((((BIG HUGS))))))))

I haven't caught any cats in the trap so far. I made more flyers today so will start taping them to neighbors doors. I check the local shelter obsessively and they already have a flyer. I wish she would just show up there so I can go get her! My husband thinks someone probably took her in. If so, they need to give her back before I have a breakdown!!

Mani is right about really searching.  My cat went missing right after we had moved to a new home.  I was afraid she was trying to get back to our old home or something but it turns out she was hiding in bushes right across the street!  I don't remember how many days it was but it seemed like an eternity that's for sure.  I was out searching again one night and was sure I had seen the glint of cat eyes in the bush, and sure enough there she was.  Even so I had to sit there for quite awhile until she would come out.  Scary.  I sure hope you find her.

Ahhhh!! I think my cat is on the animal shelters website!! I don't know how I'm going to keep it together for the next 12 hours until they open.

It wasn't my cat. I'm seriously considering spending $1000 to have a pet detective travel here and look for her.

Try not to give up hope! Has your cat ever been outside before or is this her first time out? She may be hiding out somewhere - hunkered down and frightened. Try putting some of your clothes, her bed or blankets from inside to the outside. Her litter box is another option as well as her special food. I don't know of anyone using a pet detective to search for a lost cat although there are people who do that sort of thing. What about an animal communicator, if you believe. Some people get great results. I know your heart must be breaking for your kitty and I hope that she is found very, very soon. :cross: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

She has been in the backyard and around the house before, but it is really like she disappeared into thin air. Pet detectives have tracking dogs that can hopefully follow her scent trail. There are none in Las Vegas so I've been talking to one in Arizona. She's given me tips like baiting the cat trap with KFC chicken and making trails from the street to the trap with tuna juice. The fact that I have flyers everywhere and sent an amber alert to 500 neighbors and have not had one sighting just makes me feel so hopeless. I feel like the detective is my last hope because I'm starting to doubt she's in my area and just have no idea where to look at this point.

So, she has been outside before then? That is one good thing in a way because she should know where "home" is. You live in Las Vegas but your location says Texas? Or did you just look for a pet detective in Vegas. No matter, I was just wondering about possible wildlife in your area that could have possibly gone after your cat scaring her away or worse. :( I think you have gone to excellent extremes trying to get the word out about your lost kitty. I do hope you get a resolution to this and she may come home to you safe and sound. :cross: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
