Hello everybody! My name is Maddy, and I'm a teenager from Florida! I am owned by five parrots and a month old kitten. Ever since I became a protective bird owner back in 2010, I decided that I wouldn't let any cats live in my house. Not because I didn't love cats, I've had them in the past and love them, just because I didn't want them to hurt my birds. However, about a month ago when my mom went out to go to work around 7am, she heard a kitten crying outside. She looked in the bushes and found a little grey kitten all by herself. She figured her mom was just out hunting, and left for work. When she came back around 6pm, she got out of her car and heard the same cry. She looked back in the bushes and saw the same kitten, still all alone. I had no idea about the crying kitten until around 9pm that night. My dad told me about her, and was trying to figure out how to get her because she was so far back in the bushes. I figured she couldn't be back too far, and went out to help get her. I was wrong. She was back so far in our bushes, and we have a bunch of sand spurs in the bush she was in. I wasn't going to leave her there, so I wedged myself between a tree and the bush, and managed to stretch just far enough to grab her by the scruff of her tiny little neck. We brought her inside and got a good look at her. She was so. freaking. tiny. About the size on my fist, maybe smaller. We are pretty sure that she is a baby from momma black cat, the cat that has litters in our yard all the time. We think that she was the runt, and abandoned by her mother. We got her formula, but had to feed her from a syringe that night because all the pet stores were closed and the store we went to had no bottles. She hadn't eaten in over 12 hours, but she would hardly eat anything. I honestly didn't think she was going to make in through the night. She did, and we got her a bottle the next day, but she still wouldn't eat much. After a few days she learned how to drink from the bottle probably, and started to eat more and gain more weight. The next few weeks she grew and grew. But we had a problem. When we first took her in, one of our friends said she wanted to take her and give her to her daughter, my BFF, as a surprise for her Birthday. So we would take her over to their house when we went so they could see her and help feed her, however my friend had no idea of her mother's plans.  In the beginning I was fine with this. However, as the time to give her to them drew near, I started to get very upset. I, along with the rest of my family, had bonded to this little kitten. We saved her life, we raised her, we played with her. We loved her. So we told our friend our feelings, and asked if we promised to find another kitten for her daughter, if we could keep our kitty. She was disappointed, as she loved the kitty too. But we were able to keep her.

But she did. And here she is today. Healthy, happy, almost totally weaned, and almost litter trained.

I'm so very glad we are keeping her! I am still worried about my birds, but I trust Harper much more then I would another cat, because she was raised around them. And I will work very hard to let her know that touching the birds or getting any where near then is totally unacceptable. That means no feather toys!

Thank you for taking the time to read about Harper. I look forward to getting to know you and your babies.

Hi, welcome to TCS!  I am already in love with Harper, just looking at your avatar I had to come in and have a look to see more of her.
I love grey kitties and always get excited when I see new ones joining TCS.   You and your family are great for taking Harper in and rearing her, thank you for caring so much, and for falling in love and keeping her with you.  She looks much loved, confident and curious about her world.  Just what she should be.  May you find another little kitten for your friend soon.

I look forward to seeing more posts from you, and lots of stories and photos of Harper.
