I posted yesterday about a cat that I'm supposed to adopt from a shelter. She has had recurring URIs. After doing some reading I'm cincerned that she may have FHV or FCV. I did get a reply on tthe forum that even if a staff vet isn't available, there may be one that periodically visits. At this point I'm worried that there may not be a vet at all and if there is, the cat may not get the testing it needs and be put down. I don't know if I can request testing or if it would be done. I know it's been tested for Feline Leukemia but b3yond that, I don't know what their protocol is for sick animals Has anyone had this problem?

Is the shelter open today?  You could call them and voice your concerns to them.  Each shelter is different with their procedures.  I would think that a shelter that has been good about calling you with updates wouldn't euthanize her without calling you first unless she becomes so ill that it's a matter of being the humane thing to do.

If she has a history of reoccurring URI she could well have the herpes virus which is usually easily controlled with l-lysine.

I couldn't get anyone today. I will give them a call first thing Monday. I'm hoping that if nothing else, I can pay to have those tests done, if they won't run them.

Quite honestly, I'd go ahead and adopt her and bring her home if they'll allow it as shelters are sooo stressful it just aggravates the illness.  I have a kitty who has Feline Herpes and she leads a very normal life.  She's now 8 years old and is in very good health.  There's a lot you can do to help keep the herpes virus at bay, but top of the list is getting her healthy.  Maybe you can visit the shelter on Saturday and talk to someone.

I would definitely call the shelter and find out more information.  If she's on antibiotics, if she was just tested for FELV or FIV as well.  I have a herpes cat and she leads a happy life.  She has occasional flare ups but for the most part she does really well.

The shelter won't let me take her to a vet or adopt her while she's sick! They won't bring in a vet and if she doesn't get better, she'll be put down.

I'm so upset because I feel like it's my fault. I brought her to the shelter with the hopes that she'd either be claimed or I'd adopt her. I didn't know this could happen. And maybe she's only sick because she's in that place with other sick animals. I contacted about 30 cat rescues before taking her there and nobody would take her. I'm so frustrated and upset. I was looking forward to having her.

I am so sorry.  Some shelters have very strict rules.  You said she was having surgery, I am assuming this is a spay.  They can't do the surgery while she's sick with a URI and most shelters won't let a cat leave unless it's been spayed/neutered.  I understand that because a lot of people won't get it done.

I was told today that she's being re evaluated. It's ridiculous because I'm willing to get her vet care and take her. They'd rather keep spending money to keep her just to have to put her down. The policy is asinine. I am thinking about contacting the director because I'm sure they're justbas aware as I am that if they continue putting her back with the other cats, she will never get better It makes no sense.

I don't know how much money you're willing to spend but there is one possible thing that you could do that they might go along with.  I am assuming she needs spayed and that's the reason they are unwilling to release her.  I can completely understand that.  I am sure they have vets they work with maybe they would release her to a vet that they work with to be hospitalized and then he would spay her before releasing her to you.  You would of course have to pay to have her at the vets and the vet would need the space to have her isolated.
