I am so desperate and need some advice. I just had a baby who is allergic to the cat and I cannot keep him any longer. I have desperately tried finding a home for him putting out an ad and asking friends and family, to no avail. I have tried getting him into no kill cat shelters but they are all full, I have tried getting him into the no kill animal shelter and there is a long waiting list. I am in the Pittsburgh PA area. I called the Animal Rescue League and was told they do not put cats down unless there is a medical or behavioral reason so I felt ok taking him there in hopes he would be adopted, I know he is healthy but they called me a few days later and said his behavior isnt good (I know hes probably so scared) and to come get him by Friday (tomorrow) or they will put him down. I do not want him to be put down but dont know what else to do. Please help.

Some ideas

Will the rescue place let you run an ad first to try to place him? I bet his personality change is due to the shelter

Ask local vets to take him and try to help place him. Alot of vets have hearts.

Any local farms? Farmers love cats because they take care of the rodents.

What about a dog house in your back yard or a loved one back yard for him to live in?

Too bad you weren't closer to Connecticut. I think a lady would let him live in her barn.

I am sending prayers your way.

I was wondering that. I do know someone that would let him live in their backyard although its not fenced but there are a lot of cats around there and my cat has only ever been an indoor cat plus now its snowy and freezing temperatures where I am and thinking he wont last long. :(

Try isolating the cat in another part of your home/apt away from the baby until you find a solution.

I have tried that I put the cat in the bathroom for a couple months while I tried finding a home for him but no takers then I took him to the local Animal Rescue League. I felt so bad putting him in the bathroom too. I have to get him tomorrow or they will put him down.

You could look on Petfinder for rescue groups in your area and call them .

Or as mentioned,  you could try asking vets for help.  especially if you have a regular vet, start there.

Another idea,   i shop at an independent pet supply store that sometimes will take a cat or kittens and adopt them out.     Maybe there is some place like that?

or if you know of any other business or office that would like a "store cat" .

NU?  NY Yiddish expression.  Putting him in the bathroom for a few days or so is not as bad as putting him down.  I can't adopt him as I am in NYC and already have my hands full.  Pick him up.  Put him back in the bathroom and rethink the situation.  Start looking again for another home for him.  It is a reprieve,

It will work out in the end if you stay strong.

Yeah, I agree with MadsNYCat.  Pick him up tomorrow and put him back in the bathroom if that was working out okay for your baby. Obviously this is no permanent solution but it will give you time to figure something else out.  Keeping him in the bathroom  for a few more days or even months is better than having him put down.

Here is the link to where you can search by your zip code for nearest animal welfare groups.   this should bring up not just shelters but rescue groups that are like networks of foster homes.    Maybe if you can get him tomorrow and put him back in the bathroom,  if that was not making your baby sick,   that might give you time to try those places too.

Sometimes babies do get past allergies and if they grow up with pets it can turn out they have less problems.   But I don't know how bad the reaction was,   and I totally get not wanting to put your new baby at risk.   Thanks for caring about both your baby and the cat.
