I have been thinking about getting 2 poinsettia plants but am afraid Bella & Thunder will eat them. They eat just about everything and knock over things on my video cabinet.  All of my cabinets are low but you know how cats are, they climb.

What can I do to have these flowers  that are safe away from the cats ?

The best person to ask about this would be a poison control center or your vet. I do know that I keep poinsettias in winter and that my cats have always been okay, and I also know that their toxicity is 'low' compared to other holiday plants like lilies, mistletoe, and holly.  However I am in a different situation that you since my cats show no interest in eating anything but cat food and the occasional human dish usually involving meat. I still wouldn't keep lilies around but I don't fret too much over my poinsettias. If your cats really do eat everything though, and in large quantities, it might not be worth the risk.  I'd ask your vet.

In terms of keeping them away from your cats, do what you'd do to keep them away from anything else? Perhaps put them in a room you don't let the cats enter?

I go for the silk version; but then I don't care for potted plants so I only use them in arrangements anyway..  It's not worth the risk to me.  I'm not sure if you can keep them outside; though I know if you plant them, they will keep.

This is a good article to read this time of year: http://www.thecatsite.com/a/cats-and-christmas-tips-for-cat-owners

I would not get them given your house is smaller(if I remember correctly) and the fact your cats are into everything.  Even if they do not get sick if they eat any chances are they will puke

Anyway you can put them outside but hung in front of a window or placed ona  table.  Imagine a stray would not bother it as much as a cat in house.

If you really want poinsettias why not just get a few fake ones? The real ones look kind of like fake plants anyway, lol. They don't have a special scent or anything, right?

The artificial ones are a lot prettier than the real ones, in my opinion.  Besides that, you won't need to remember to water them and they're safe for the kitties!

If you are worried about it, I would recommend getting some fake ones.  While Poinsettas aren't highly toxic, they can cause upset stomachs and eye irritation.
