My boyfriend has this cat hes 14 yrs old no teeth and just lazy. He use to have two actually one was 8 years old and well the 14 year old one day the 8 year old was acting weird and we were like if she dnt get better were taking her to the vet the next day well when we woke up she was dead :( it was quiet sad... Well a few months passed and my boyfriend had been talking about kittens for two or three months after so i thought it would be nice to get another kitten for his birthday Nov 19 ... not to long ago....(Keep in mind we still have the 14 year old ) Ok so we get her and we keep them separated and different litters and food..But we live in a small apt so she ends up using his litter box and eating his food. Well after a few days our older cat started not caring anymore that she was there. Well he stopped eating and i contacted a shelter for some advice and they told me that i should have never gotten a new kitten (12-14wks old ) for a cat that old it was too stressful for him so immediately i start calling around trying to find this kitten a new home so maybe he would go back to eating and acting like a cat again.. well its been two days and now all hes been doing is hiding in the bathroom and crying all the time he dont let us sleep and hes still not eating he does scratch around his water bowl and drink water but why is he always in the bathroom crying and crying he'll stop and go to sleep but then wake up and start crying and goin to the bathroom and crying. I Need some serious help I know i should take him to the vet asap but they are closed today :( PLEASE SOMEONE HELP whats wrong

An emergency vet should be open today and this is an emergency.  If he has not eaten for 2 days and is crying constantly, he requires immediate  attention.  Does he use his litterbox as normal or no? If not, it is even more if an emergency.

If you absolutely can't get to the vet today you have to at least force feed the cat. You can do this using a syringe.  Others here are more knowledgeable than this than I am so hopefully they will chime in.

The bottom line is, though, that this is an emergency and requires an emergency vet.  Good luck.

I agree it definitely sounds like something is wrong with your cat, I would try to find an emergency vet you can take your cat to today.

Agreed with the above. You do not want to go down that road if he continues not to eat, trust me.

If the vet is not an option, syringe feed him. You can get a syringe at your pharmacy, or even Walmart. You want to aim for the roof of his mouth; you can force the tip in through the side of the mouth. Good luck!

Water is the biggest issue here, a cat can survive without food for many days actually, without starving, but they can NOT live without water.

Do you know for a fact he is drinking enough? It helps if you use a measuring cup, measure out the amt of water you put down to watch the amt he is drinking.

You should def. take him to a vet as soon as possible, meanwhile be sure his food dish doesn't smell like the kitten, wash it thoroughly, and offer him chicken baby food to get his appetite stimulated again.

He is still mourning his lost companion, and at 14, he is not ever going to be accepting of a young, spunky, annoying (in his eyes) new kid in the home.

It's okay the poor old guy is lazy with no teeth, I feel sorry for him actually. He is a senior kitty, in his retirement years basically. His world as he has known it is

Be sure he is peeing too.

Please don't delay the vet visit, there's a good possibility that the 8 yr old would still be alive today if she had seen a vet sooner. Some things like a urinary tract infection/blockage can be fatal if not treated right away.

There's no indication the eight-year-old would have lived; sometimes, these things just happen suddenly, for no reason. We have no way of knowing what was wrong.

As for the food, it actually IS very important, because cats can go into hepatic lipidosis after only two days of not eating. So while they technically won't starve to death, their bodies will start to consume the fat of their liver, which backs up the whole system. Best case scenario, this is a very difficult and expensive fix. Worst case scenario, and quite commonly, the cat dies.

If at all possible, a vet has to be seen, but even if not, the food is a big deal and the cat must be force fed.

I nursed a cat through hepatic lipidosis and it's a serious thing and it's something that a cat may not survive.  My cat did survive but it was a long road.  You definitely do need to get some food in him even if it means syringe feeding.

Trust me, Vegancuddler, I know aaall about cats and death, I have had more than my share since I have a cat rescue group.

However, at 8 years old there are not many health issues that come on so suddenly, and that actually kill a cat in just a very short time like that, that is why I mentioned a uti/blockage. She did not say the cat was sickly or any changes until the day before she died.

Of course it is unknown, because the cat didn't make it to the vet. "these things just happen suddenly for no reason", I have never seen an 8 year old cat drop dead for no reason.....

Baby kittens, yes! Plenty, but a sudden onset of illness and in a day to die? My first thought is a blockage, as they would not have noticed the signs until it was going on for days and the toxin build-up caused her to seem sick, which is in an advanced stage of a blockage, but could still be fixed with vet care.

I am also not blaming here, just stated not to wait, how important it is to get him to a vet asap.

I know all about heptatic lipidosis as well.

Allie Montoya, as you can read here, we are all saying that your bf's cat needs food.

Try offering chicken baby food asap, especially if you are unable to get him to a vet right away. (like today)

You can microwave it for a short time so it is warm and smelly, this makes it more enticing. This may do the trick.

If he still refuses to eat it, then he does need to be syringe fed.

Dilute it with warm water and squirt small amts at a time to his cheek area, never down his throat.

He needs protein for his body to NOT go into a state of hepatic lipidosis ( fatty liver disease)

There are 2 types of hp, one caused by starvation, the other can happen for a few reasons, one is from stress, such as a new pet brought home :)
