Strange lump on cat's head

Hi,

My cat has been acting a little odd as of late. Today, for example, he did not come downstairs with me in the morning for his breakfast - which he always does - and he has not showed any desire to be let out which, again, is usually a daily routine for him.

I was stroking him recently and I noticed a lump-like thing on the top of his head. So naturally I am quite worried now because I think it is very unlikely that the lump on his head and the fact he deviated from routine are not linked to each other.

However, I have no idea what the lump is on his head. It does not cause him any pain or discomfort I don't think, but I can't tell if it's in his fur or on the surface of his head. It's as if some sort of liquid has dried into his fur and has now hardened, giving it a tough, rough texture.

I think we will need to bring him down to our local vets, but in the meantime does the lump-type thing ring any bells with any of you people? It's very strange.

Thank you.

I am glad you're getting him checked out by a vet. The sudden change in behavior plus the lump on the head are worrisome. :( I don't have any idea what the lump could be. Many vibes that it's not anything serious and that he's back to his normal self soon.

It's hard to say what the lump is, but it does sound like his behavioral changes may be related.  I would recommend a vet visit to find out what's going on with your kitty.

It was an abscess, inflicted through being bitten on the head by another cat. It is quite common for cats to sustain infections after being in a fight, apparently.

The vet shaved the area and cut the abscess off, which was a little disgusting to see but I'm very pleased that he is alright.

Glad to hear you were able to get him into a Vet, and yes abscesses are quite a common result of cat fights.

What a relief for you to know it was something easily treatable. And he probably was in pain without showing it - cats are very good at hiding pain completely.
