First of all, sorry for the crummy picture quality (cell phone camera and cat who didn't want to have his injury disturbed!).  My 8-9 month old cat is indoor/outdoor throughout the day, and he stays inside at night.  A few hours ago he was sitting on my lap and he was fine.  I let him out for a little while (maybe 30 minutes) and when he came back in, he had this injury on his back.  It's on his right side, about an inch down from his spine, and maybe two inches back from the base of his tail.  I first though maybe a dog got ahold of him, but there's only one hole (about the size of a pencil eraser).  If something had bitten him, he'd probably have two holes, right?

My husband held him for me, and I blotted at the injury.  The blood on the paper towel was light in color--sort of watery looking, and there's no odor to the injury.  I dabbed on some neosporin, and he seems perfectly fine so far.  The injury looks dark, but I think that's the neosporin that I put in it making it look like that.  Before I doctored him up, I got a pretty good look at it.  It looks to be maybe 1/4 inch deep and , like I said, no odor or profuse bleeding.  The hole was actually starting to fill up a bit--I think it was starting to clot.  Any ideas what this is, and if it can wait until Friday??  (9:00 p.m. here, tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and the closest emergency vet is 2 hours away!)  What should I do??

I understand its the holidays and nothing is open. Can you at least call the emergency vet and get their input? Is there no way to get a hold of the local vet? It could certainly be some kind of bite from an animal or puncture wound from any object. Unfortunately, it could even be a would from a BB gun.

It looks a lot like my neighbors cat had and almost in the same spot. It ended up the cat was shot by another neighbor. I hope you can get your kitty to see a vet soon.

I found an emergency vet 4 miles from my house and we're here now! This place must be brand new--I've driven by 100 times and never seen it before. Thank God I found them!

He's going to be fine...a week's worth of Clavamox is the treatment.  :)  The vet said it didn't look like an animal attack/fight or even a bb gun wound (which was my concern).  She said it looks like he got caught up in something (briars or maybe a fence or dense shrubbery) and got caught and struggled to get out, and that's how the got the wound.  Apparently there were several more scratches on the inside of his right leg, but they were very small and weren't bleeding--just deep scratches.

I'm so glad to hear that you were able to get him to a vet and that he's going to be okay!
Good to know that vet is nearby, huh?
