I have a 10 year old female in heat. She can't be spayed due to a blood clotting disorder. What can I do to help her? She also has feline hyperesthesia, so catnip is a no. Any ideas? I've had her for about a year now, and this is the first heat she's had.

Sorry your cat is uncomfortable, which makes us parents uncomfortable too!

There is a somewhat graphic way of relieving her uncomfortableness, you should discuss it with your vet.  If she only goes into heat once a year, I'd be tempted to learn to live with it and try alternative methods.  (A cat I was co-fostering went into heat every week, we couldn't get a spay appointment for a month.)

Something less drastic:  acupuncture.  It may calm her down.  You could also try a supplement like L-theanine, it is a calming agent.  Feliway?

Ritz' symptoms of FHS have returned, especially after she eats at night.  I don't want to put her back on Prozac, so I am taking her Tuesday for an acupuncture treatment.  (The woman who rescued Ritz is an acupuncturist.)  We'll see how it goes....
