My 8 year old cat has developed a blockage in the past couple of weeks. He was acting strange so I trusted my instincts and took him to the vet. They identified that he had a blockage because they did an ultrasound. He was not completely blocked but did have crystals forming in his bladder. They put a catheter in him with sedation and he had it for three days. This morning we took him home from the vet and not almost 8 hours later and he hasn't urinated. He is currently going into the litter box and "trying" to pee. Its really frequent like every 15 minutes. We called the vet about two hours after he was home and he told us that it was typical. If he doesn't pee by the morning we will have to take him back and inevitable he will need another catheter. Has anyone else experienced this after there cat had a catheter? I am really worried about him and don't want this to get worse.

Thanks for any advice you have.

Hi

I am very glad you have already called the vet to address the problem and are ready to bring him back in the morning if need be.

Honestly, I have never heard of this happening after a cat was un-blocked and would also be very concerned. However, if you trust your vet and have explained this all clearly to him, and your vet has told you this is normal in his experience and to wait it out a few more hours, I would follow his advice and do so.

I am very sorry you are going through this with your kitty.

How is he doing today? It is not uncommon for another blockage to recur after catheterization. Sometimes the inflammation alone is enough. If he is still having trouble peeing with nothing coming out, he needs the vet again ASAP.

We waited about 10 hours and he still hadn't urinated so we took him back to the vet. Luckily our vet is on call 24 hours a day so I was able to take him back to our vet instead of a 24 hour emergency clinic. It is now two days later and I am waiting for an update today. The vet also said it was common to have another blockage after the catheter so I really hope that he can pull through this. He has never had any problems and my wife is very upset that he won't pull through. Is it possible for him to pull though this and lead a normal life?

Sorry to hear that he is back at the vet's, but I'm glad that you got him the attention he needs. Blockages can be deadly if untreated. To answer your question, yes, if he can get through this dangerous time and recover from the blockage, he can go on to lead a long and healthy life. You will probably need to make some diet changes. If you are feeding any dry food at all, I would encourage you to read what this vet has to say about diet and urinary tract issues. http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth

Yes of course! You may need to make some changes to his diet, but in the long run there is no reason to assume that this will impact his lifespan or his quality of life.  He just has to make it through this incident.
