My cat was hacking for months and nothing coming up or out! They did an ultrasound and said no hairball in the intestinal tract! Three days later, he coughed up a very large hairball!!! My conclusion, they could not see it on the ultrasound! Now I am going thru the same thing again...coughing and hairball ball meds not working.. tried copius amounts of pumpkin etc.. no luck!!

For the first this Ritz had a hairball problem.  On the advice of members, I tried egg yolk lechitin and it helped.  I sprinkled it on Ritz (raw) food and she licked it right up.  Here is a thread discussing EYL.  (Computer problems, can't link)

It comes in a capsule and you can sprinkle it in wet food, tastes pretty good (well to a cat).

You could also try giving your cat a raw egg and see if that helps.

My long hair cat gets hairballs no matter how many times I brush her. She's been to the vet and is perfectly healthy. I give her EYL every other night mixed in her wet food and she hasn't had a hairball since (I started the EYL about a month ago).

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
You can either feed egg yolks themselves 2 or 3 times a week, or use the egg yolk lecithin capsules. For REALLY bad hairballs, you might want to consider one egg yolk weekly AND the egg yolk lecithin. That's what I do. My worst hairball offenders need a full capsule of EYL twice a day, actually.
