Hey everyone :)

I have a 9 month old neutered male kitten/cat, he is my first cat and I have a few questions reguarding feeding amounts.

He is on adult food now, as a kitten i free fed him, knowing he was a growing boy, but now i want to feed him a set amount per day, I just dont know how much and how often would be best.

He is on whiskas wet and advance nutrition dry and is an indoor cat.

He weighs 10lb (is that okay?) He doesnt look overweight but i dont want to overfeed or underfeed him.

Thankyou :)

Before starting any weight maintenance program , always consult your vet first.

Each cat eats a different amount, because of their activity level, metabolism, etc. A good starting point is one 5.5 oz can of wet food a day. Not sure what that is in dry terms, but someone with experience with calorie counting will be able to help. Is it feasible for you switch to 100% wet? It's much healthier.

You should also invest in a scale, and weigh kitty every week. The first few weeks will be trial and error as you find that sweet spot.

Normally 2 - 3 times a day is best - most of us do before work, after work and before bed.

When you look at your cat from above, you should be able to make out his waist, similar to this:

And when you feel his stomach, you should be able to feel his ribs. That's the ideal weight for a cat. I can see my cat's waist from above, but it's not as pronounced as the picture above, because he is still a little overweight.

How can you see if your cat is slim or fat in longhair cats? My Fletcher is 8month old and still growing, I have no idea of how much he should weight and, while i can feel his ribs, I cannot see his weightline under all that fur!

He is quite long haired but when i feel down his body i can feel the shape of his waist :)
