he's 14, was lightly sudated and had hard poo removed by vet who found hard lump in his belly vet says its either side so still space in middle to function, he has belly full of fluid vet drained small amount to test and said it didn;t look good and prob the mass is cancer. he had stopped eating then drinking, i insisted he put on a drip and he responded fairly well, eat a little when i fed him, he also pleased to see me, brought him home with stanby pain killers.

he gets up to use litter tray, legs wobbly and eats small amounts did not drink till last night drunk loads in one go and nothing since, one minute i am sure this is the end then he seems alert again, i dont want to watch him die esp if in pain, i dont want to put him alseep if its not a killer mass i need to know for sure but i dont want to put him through too much, i can scape together the op cost but vet reluntant to do it.

help please asap

Hello, so sorry to hear your kitty isn't well. All I can offer you is mega
.

We all do the best we can for our furbabies and you too, have been, and are doing all you can. I think you have to keep talking to your vet to determine what is best now too. I think you'll know when the time comes what is best for your baby.
Sending you both

Thank You for ur reply/support I don't seem to be getting any others, maybe people don't know wot to say.

He's eating and drinking a little using his litter tray. but looks unwell in his eyes.

weight 3kg

Even the vet says I will know when it's his time, but I fear the time will be painful and that worries me/upsets me.

I really don't know what to do.

Why is the vet saying not to put him through the op, better to just kill him (that's how it feels) is it cos of after the op he will suffer?.

The way I see it if they open him up and can't remove the mass best to not bring him round but say goodbye then. but if they can remove it then hasn't he got a chance of a few more years my last cat died age 21, before that age 18, so I can't except he is old/old.

I am so sorry you are going through this.  It seems to me that the vet is saying that operation won't help much.  He may be gently trying to help you realize it is time to let go.

That is always a hard decision but it is one you may need to make for your cat's sake.

Unfortunately, any surgery is a lot to put a 14 year old cat through. And if it is cancer, that's brings even more caution. I'm so sorry, but it sounds like your cat and vet are telling you that it is time.

Could the vet be mistaken, they only guessing at wot the mass could be, no tests done apart from the fluid in his belly which they did not drain. I have read that others have found it to be just a swollen part and just meds required.

I know I have to let him go one day no one lives forever but I will be forever wondering if I cut his life short for nothing.

My freind says he doesn't sound like he is at death door.

should i just wait?

vet says it's different for humans when deciding the quality of live, that if he has op and all went well he would not have quailty of live cos he is 'old'.

What test was done on the belly fluid and what were the results?

not sure, she told me but it went over my head. All I heard was it showed it might be a cancer mass. Is it worth me asking for a clearer details she seems convinced the mass is going to be nasty said even if it's not cancer the mass is causing problems. said did not drain as it would just come back. the xray was not good cos the fliud was in the way.

My cat is sick from something he doesn't leave the spare bedroom, but could it just be the fluid causing discomfort. he short of snizzes when he eats and did have a blocked tear drop for a long time in one eye that got worst and nose full of gange but it's cleared up well dried up now, strange.

Call your vet and get a copy of the test results.  That will help others here to discuss what might be options.

I would not think the cat should be put down without knowing more. He could just feel bad because of the recent tests.  Hard to know.

Also, more tests are likely to be needed to better determine the size of the mass, what structures are involved, whether or not it is encapsulated, etc.

What pain meds is he on?

Another option might be to get a 2nd opinion from a 2nd Vet.

If you are trying to figure out, aside from what your Vet is telling you, here is a Quality of Life Scale that might helf you figure out if it is "time" or not:  http://www.veterinarypracticenews.c...olumns/bond-beyond/quality-of-life-scale.aspx

It IS a hard decision to make.  You say he looks unwell in his eye.  Look deeply into his eyes and ask him.  He will tell you if he is ready to go

He not on any meds at all, cos he don't seem to be in pain, he sleeps alot, alert and whenng  had good sleep stands up to walk to me but back legs are but weak. not eating much but does eat a little often, likes cat fish paste and sliced cooked ham, loves olive oil (one/two licks). drinking water has always drunk alot of water never been a big eater (preferred dry food) but I always made sure he eat the wet food daily.

He looks still fairky alert in the eyes they just look a bit dull.

I have thought of 2nd opinion and a vet nearer home (one I use is 6 milrs away)

I am worried wot test will they do put him through?

I phoned vet they said fluid sample was not sent off for testing, but it didn't look good!. last blood test was sep to test Pancreas which came back abnormal. They said I could have have a scan and remove some fluid to get better picture. but there is defo a large mass they felt. If I leave him as he is the fluid will start squashing his organs, if I put him through an op he may not survive being older cat the toxin could damage him if he has probs with other organs, in the past at other vets blood test have not shown any problems, he does have arthritis in his back legs. They are still saying even after all the tests they can’t really be sure unless they open him up.

I seems to me this particular Vet has no interest in trying to save your baby.  That seems obvious from what you wrote directly above.

If you feel like he still has life in him (perhaps by completing that Quality of Life scale I attached in one of my posts above), then I would definitely get a 2nd opinion from another Vet. But first, get all his records from the 1st Vet so that at least have those to go on.

I just got all his notes from 2010-2011 when he went to an expensive vet that I stopped taking him too.  only been going to this one for about a year, so missing notes maybe. Seems the ones willing to operate are the money grapping vet. The one I use now are a family run business only one surgery but do have top equipment. Sometimes I am with my cat thinking yes he has life in him other moments esp at night he sooooo sleepy.

The bloods from reports don't seem to show any concerns but it's like reading doctor to doctor reports, printed but over my head coded.

What about the records from the visit you just had with the Vet recently.  The one where you found out about the mass? You said they did an xray and blood tests?  Don't you have copies of those?  Those are the ones I would think would be most helpful if you go to a new Vet.

I agree, it sounds like you need to find a vet that is willing to take these concerns more seriously.

Praying you are able to get some help soon.

I phoned my current vet and was told none of the notes say much, as tests not done, I did get a bit annoyed as feel their decision/suggestion is based on a might be. But I am sure they have seen the signs before. My cat just went into a heavy sleep just now, I got scared again thought this is the end, then he woke and had a really big drink of water. Vet can't do anything till Monday! should I take him to another vet in morning or will that stress him.
