Hey everyone,

As the title suggests, I have scoured over these forums for weeks to try and find a solution to my cat pooping on the floor problem, but most of them don't seem to have happy endings. Is it at all possible to fix this issue once it starts? And in my case, has gone on for almost 2 years?

A little back story... I have 4 cats currently, but only one of them has litter box issues. Her name is Vera and I've had her since she was 10 weeks old. She is 3 years old now. I also adopted her littermate, Chanel, and have 2 other cats that have come into the picture after the litterbox issues started, so I don't think they are to blame.

When Vera was a kitten she used to pee on my bed every night for almost a month. At this point, she was pooping in the box with no problems. When I asked my vet for advice, he suggested I separate her and her sister (Chanel) for a week because they may be having "issues". I did this and then a couple days later she no longer peed in my bed and we have not had a pee related incident since.

Fast forward a few months later, I moved out of my parent's basement to a new city, in a new apartment, with my boyfriend. Shortly thereafter the pooping outside of the box began. She would either poop directly in front of the box or in the bathtub.  This has continued for almost 2 years now. I now live in a house with fiance and two additional cats. We have 5 litter boxes. 2 are in the basement, one is in an office on the ground floor and the other 2 are in a guest bedroom on the same floor. They are all large, uncovered boxes. I scoop them daily. I primarily use the cat attract litter, but have recently tried some other options.... non clumping, crystals, corn based (this is what I'm trying currently in one box).

Vera will consistently poop every night right in front of the boxes in the guest room, on our hardwood floors. I have litter mats around the boxes, but she seems to prefer going on the wood floors. I try every night to catch her in the act, but it's as if she knows she needs to be sneaky. She has a nightly ritual.. she will come downstairs, eat, go back upstairs, and repeat a few times until she is ready to "go". If she notices me watching her walk to the guest room, she will turn around and run towards me acting sweet and not go. She will only poop on the floor when she is absolutely sure that no humans are watching her. She doesn't seem to mind if other cats are in the room. My fiance and I have literally set up booby traps and mirrors so we can be alerted when she is walking towards the room without her knowing, in hopes that we can place her in the box. If I put her in the box right before she is about to "go", she will poop in the box, but then immediately jump out when she is done and not cover her poo. However, if she poops on the floor, she will attempt to cover it... so from what I read, I do not think this is a dominant behavior.

I seriously am thinking she has a fear of pooping inside a box. I have tried putting empty litter boxes out, litter boxes with carpet scraps, newspaper shreds... she will not go in them. She also hates when we watch her doing this. If she can't find time without me watching her at night, she will wait until I'm at work to poop on the floor.

I'm really out of ideas. I am thinking as a last resort to seclude in one room with a box, but I just don't think this will work and honestly I would hate to keep her locked in a room all alone. She is very attached to me and is a great cat, despite these litter box issues.

Is there any hope for me???

Also, I forgot to add that she does not seem to have any health issues. She has seen 3 different vets and all are clueless about what I should do. One told me to see a behaviorist, but I am not sure that I can really afford that, and the closest one is 2.5 hours away.

It is possible Vera is the type of cat who does not want to share a litter box with other cats. Since you know her toilet schedule, I suggest you put her "exclusive" box in one room and after her meal, put her there until she is done. In time, Vera will ask you to bring her to her personal poop place when she needs to go.

hmm.. that is a really interesting idea. So this way, I won't have to keep her locked up all day, just at night when I know she is about to "go". Thank you for your suggestion! I will have to try this tonight.

OMG! Our cats must be sisters. (I definitely need to update my thread). My girl Angel also pooped on the floor for 2 years. We tried everything we could think of. We even locked her in the bathroom for a couple weeks (only coming out to play) and she did GREAT. Then she came out and pooped on the floor. The only difference between our cats seems to be that Angel wasn't afraid to poop in front of me.

What finally worked was a fluke. She had her own box already because of some fighting. I put a pheromone plugin in the bathroom with her box because of the fighting. Finally I started scooping every time I was in the bathroom. Turns out Angel won't poop in a box of there is anything in it. Even a tiny pee clump and she goes on the floor. I scooped like crazy for a month to keep her using the box. She didn't use it every time but she kept getting better. Then I switched to twice a day when I figured out when she was pooping. She was still doing good. Just recently I unplugged the diffuser just to see and she is still using the box.

Oh, I also put a box where we wouldn't see her go. She prefers that one.

Just don't give up on her. Our girl went on carpet for 2 years and now she's on her 3rd month of using the box.

Thank you! Your story gives me hope. I do scoop the boxes everyday, but with 4 cats there is definitely bound to be something in there when she needs to go. I guess I will need to try secluding her to the bathroom with her own private box. I am just afraid she will be upset if I'm not around. Like I said in my post, she is very attached to me....she cries whenever she can't find me :(

I would never, ever get rid of her or anything like that. It just seemed like I needed to accept the fact that she hates pooping in a box... but maybe we can still change that habit. I know what my homework is for the weekend !

Just wanted to give an update on the situation... On Monday, we fed Vera and then locked her in a bathroom with a clean litter box and within a half hour I checked on her and there was pee and poop in the box!
This is the first time she has pooped in a box in YEARS. We were thrilled and completely surprised. However, last night I tried the same thing and kept her in the bathroom for most of the night and no poop. For some reason I was convinced that maybe she just didn't need to "go" and let her out. Woke up this morning to a pile of poop on the floor in the guestroom (her usual spot).

This is completely my fault though. I should have just kept her in the bathroom until she used the box. I just feel so bad locking her up because she cries. I guess this is the only thing I can do for now though.

Does she go in the same spot in the guestroom? If so you could try putting something there that she won't like. Such as aluminum foil. Just something she won't want to step on.

That won't work. If something is in her way and she can't go to her usual spot, she will find another. On rare occasions she has gone on the concrete floor in our basement in front of the boxes we have down there. In my old apartment she would sometimes go in the bathtub. She is pretty determined to not use the litterbox.

Vera has now been pooping in her own private box in the bathroom for about a week now! I am very happy about this. It seems that the issue was indeed that she didn't want to poop in a box that other cats use. Now I am unsure of how to proceed.... We have gotten into a good cycle where I just lock her in the bathroom at night when we go to sleep and then let her out in the morning when I wake up. She seems to be pooping sometime in the night/morning.

Is this just how it needs to be with her, or can I start training her to share the litterbox? Does anyone have any advice about what I should do now? I was thinking that maybe I could try mixing in some litter from the other boxes slowly so she can adjust. I am afraid this could cause a negative reaction though. Let me know your thoughts!
