I was just wondering if anyone knows what kind of weather they are predicting here in the U.S. this winter.  It's only November and we're already starting to have those Artic cold fronts and it seems way to early in the season for that type of weather.  So it's scary...I don't want winter coming so soon!!!!

I'm also interested in finding out what kind of winter they're predicting for Europe and other parts of the world.

I haven't seen any long-term predictions for Europe, but I think it's going to be a cold, cold winter based on the winter coats cats and dogs have this year. Their coats are much thicker than they were last year, when we had an incredibly long winter, but not one that was unusually cold for weeks on end.

It's ruddy freezing here tonight in the UK. Forgot to take my gloves to work today and when I came out tonight my hands were blue within 5 mins. Just got in and am now snuggled user a duvet trying to get warm. According to some sources, we are going to have the coldest winter in 60 years. The country grinds to a halt when there is a few inches of snow here nowadays. We see news reports from the USA when you have bad weather and we get nothing like that here.

If you don't like the weather in Michigan, just blink!
Lol that's for sure, snow below freezing one day, heat wave the next followed by snow again. Michigan basically has 3 seasons, winter summer and road construction.

Yup, I heard like mamabirdy that we're expecting a cold one for the UK, but compared to other places we tend to get off fairly lightly so will wait and see.  I often think our biggest problem is nothing lasts long so it can't be prepared for in the same way - ice for a week or two, snow for odd days or a couple of weeks then it chucks it down with rain, gets warm and everywhere floods. The it gets windy and bits fall of buildings and trees fall down (not like tornadoes though).

We are in one of the areas in the US that either gets nothing or gets walloped it seems.  We had back to back blizzards when DD was a newborn.  It was awful.  We lost power during the first and ended up being evacuated to my mother's house with DD.  We came home for a night and had to head back to my Mom's because another was coming!  DH stayed home with the girls for that one (we'd taken them with us the first time) and they never lost power.

The last few years they've said it would be bad and we've gotten next to nothing.  I'm completely ok with that!!!  The winter before last DD never even got to wear her snow boots.  I gave them to the neighbor for their little girl a couple weeks ago.  They still had the tags on them!

Our local weather-weenie just talked about that this morning. We are to have a "normal" winter with normal temps and normal precip. Which essentially means that anything could happen.

And, I really hate to say this, but we seriously need some rain/snow. We are very below normal precipitation this year, so even though I will complain loudly, bitterly, and long when we get that first snowstorm, we really do need something. (Rain would be preferable.)

The farmers almanac is forecasting below normal temps and above average precipitation. Definitly not happy about the forecast, have lived in Michigan all my life, but hate winter driving. Here is a link for thd farmers almanac http://www.farmersalmanac.com/weather/2013/08/25/2014-us-winter-forecast/ which tends to be fairly accurate in their forecast.
I actually have a copy at home, this is the part of their forecast that I like the least:    "Coldest temperatures will be over the Northern Plains on east into the Great Lakes."  And then on the map for my part of the country it says   "Piercing cold with normal snowfall."  All of this probably means we'll get back to back Artic cold fronts.  YUCK!!!!!!!

You've got "biting" cold which might be just a little warmer.  I have to agree, this type of forecast isn't anything to be happy about.

I like to read the Almanac.....my grandmother swore by their forecasts.

Around here, we check the caterpillars (the wooly worms, as they're known around here). Our town has a Wooly Worm Festival.
And although, many of them this year have dark brown ends, the middles aren't that dark...at least the ones I've seen around the house (and I really do check them out when I see them). Meaning the beginning and end of winter will be the worst part, but winter as a whole shouldn't be too bad. For me, though, anything below 60 degrees is cold. Honestly, if I could go into complete hibernation, I probably would.

I mentioned in another thread (Monday's QOTD) that it was white outside when we awakened this morning. I am not amused.

I love winter! It's white and stuff outside and it was so much fun clearing snow from my car.

Joe *******i runs a weather prediction site on subscription. Corporations and local/state governments pay him to predict weather. His forecast for last year was almost perfect, including the record cold in March. His forecast for this winter is for a rough one.

I love that Wooly Worm theory, and a Wooly Worm Festival!!!!!  AMAZING
  I want one here!

I did some work for a man once who had some really interesting facts and general knowledge, and some equally interesting theories.  One I particularly liked (living in the cooler regions of the Northern hemisphere) was that humans started out as hunter gatherers, and like that other well known hunter gatherer the bear, humans used to hibernate!
SO, it is perfectly natural that as the weather cools and the days shorten that we want to eat as much as we possibly can, store up lots of body fat, and sleep all day... Just think though, all the cats we live with would have taken over the world by the time we woke up in the spring.

I know the older people have some theories about the wooly caterpillars but I don't know all of them :tongue2:. I know that if you see white ones in August or September there's supposed to be a lot of snow. In August and September I was seeing a lot of yellow ones. . .I don't know what that means! :lol3:
