they? I understand the premise. Not hanging a cat when they get caught. BUT....if they get caught, rip the collar of, then there is no way anyone can find out where they belong. Waste of money putting a collar and tags on in my opinion.

Well not all cats get their collars caught, some do. I would never put a collar on my cats, but if I had to, it would be a breakaway collar. I also get all my cats microchipped.

My cats are all microchipped, but they do wear safety collars too. The logic in that for me is that the collar is a visible clue (if they ever got out) that my cats are pets & not strays. A lot of people still don't know about microchips, unfortunately. Yes, they might lose the collar, but that's certainly better than getting hung up. And if they don't lose it, it's a clue for people to take a look at the tag and to return them to me. The microchip is a backup method, in case they end up at a shelter.

I read somewhere a long time ago about an ear tag, and thought that would be a great idea - a visible clue that the cat is a pet - but haven't seen anything more about that. Maybe it didn't work out for some reason?

Our city has a HUGE stray population, so I figure someone is a lot more likely to pick and offer assistance to a cat with a collar than a cat without one - once you pick a cat up, if it doesn't belong to someone, then you have to figure out what to do with it. A lot of people just don't want to go there.
