Hello

Our neighbour's cat somehow got a cold the last weekend. He, comes into our house every so often (he is 16), anyway our neighbour took her cat to the vet who said its just a common cat cold and there is nothing they can really do for it, just do what humans do when we get a cold, rest, drink loads and make sure to eat.

Well, he came into our house, and he passed on his cold to bubbles our oldest cat (6 years old), who we done what the vet told the neighbour. What I should of done was kept my cats apart from healthy ones to the one with the cold as 2 others have colds now. I have 4 cats with an adopted one who is 9. The adopted one, has the cold, my oldest bubbles and now bollo, (who is 5).

I don't want taffy (same litter as bollo) or buttons (3) to get a cold. Thing is bollo and taffy are inseparable. Ideally I wouldn't want any to get a cold.

I phoned my vet and said that they have a cold and they said drink plenty, eat, and rest is best cure. They will only give out anti-biotics if they can't breath.

Luckily they are all breathing as normal just sneezing every so often (more than normal).

Are there any home made remedies that you would suggest? Think I should phone my other vets up? What should I do?

We go through the sneezing stuff (cold?) about once per year and I'm sure that I am the culprit in spreading it. Every once in a while, one of the cats will get a bad dose of it and it will last a week, but for most of them it only lasts a few days, and some don't get it at all. If they're all otherwise healthy and don't develop other symptoms I don't worry about it. Hopefully, your's will be over quickly, too.

How many cats do you have, and what is the best way from stopping it from spreading? Also what is the best way to help my boys fight it? Example, more water around the house?

Lots of water is always beneficial. Short of teaching the little critters some manners, I don't know how you can stop it from spreading. The cats sneeze and sprays it on whatever is in the path, including my clothing, shoes, etc. We've got 27 cats on our property (mini rescue operation!) plus I tend to a feral group off-property. So, the odds are pretty high of me picking something as easily transferred as a cold virus and spreading it around. I'm sure you've heard "Feed a cold", that's my philosophy. When they get the sneezes I feed them lots of their favorite canned food.  Not that lots of food necessary helps them get over the cold, but if anyone doesn't want to eat that's when I get concerned it's developed into something more than just a minor virus and off to the vet they go.

I'm thinking the poor guy lost is appetite for his breakfast?

I hope the 2 that aren't sneezing hold firm. Are all of the cats still eating well?

Probably all mine for life. Too many homeless cats, too few homes. On the rare occasions that someone asks me about getting a cat I tell them to save a life and go to the animal control facility.

This is just what I needed to see.  My little 4 mo old "Polly" has been sneezing the past 3 days, each day is a bit worse.  Does not sneeze all the time,  just once in a while. Sounded little gurgly this morning before we got up.  She is an only inside cat, but I do have 3 sorta tame feral brothers locked up in the shop  til they are for sure OK and a bit more tame. Just vaccinated them yesterday.  The weather has turned very cold and wet and icy so I figured it was that. I live in a little old drafty house. I also just put down catnip for the first time mid week, thought that might be it til this morning.

So with this info, I will wait it out.  Thanks!!

Little ones like your Polly can go from bad to worse so quickly, so I would keep a close eye on her. But older ones, if they are generally healthy otherwise, as long as they're still eating I don't worry about "the sneezes". Sorry about your awful weather, I saw where TX was getting blasted.
