Vet refusing services unless I follow HIS exact recommendation?

I brought the little kitten into the vet today. I follow Dr Dodds vaccine protocol and have spoken directly to her. This involves giving only 2 boosters and a rabies, not the traditional 3. I told the vet that and after I did he got a little bossy with me. I told him nicely that this is the protocol I choose to follow, it works very well for me. I then asked if I could have the dewormer (he needed 3 doses) and he told me that each dose is given at each vaccine appointment and I could have 1 dose now but if I am not following HIS vaccine protocol I cannot have the other dewormer doses.

At this point I became very upset trying my hardest to control myself ( my sister is there trying to do the same). He told me to come back to see the owner if I was not happy. He flat out refused to give me the wormer. I paid for an exam. I wanted a vaccine, full course of dewormer and something for his runny poops.

In the end I got the wormer after I explained to the tech who I suppose agreed with me. The vet thought I was being rude and got offended I did not want to follow his vaccine protocol. Im not sure what to do about this should I speak to the owner of this clinic? Should I let it go?

The tech said everything should be okay now and I got the wormer I needed. I told the tech it was not my intentions to be rude but there is no really good way to say "no thanks" without the vet getting offended that I follow another vets protocol.

I am not sure if this is the right sub forum for this to be in if not please move it

I am sorry you are having that problem. If it was up to me, I would talk to the owner or find a new vet. Refusing to give a patient the treatment he/she needs is unethical.

I agree. Im not sure if talking to the owner would blow up more steam though...

I do limited vaccines for my inside cats and online those who go out/get out get rabies on schedule and the dogs too. All others are vaccine free or only had kitten shots at time of spay/neuter.  Get a new vet.  If he gets this way with you now I would not want to trust him to send a cat home to recover from something that is easily handled at home.  Taht lack of trust is a HUGE issue in my mind that will affect level of care long as you are there.

My cat  only gets her rabies vaccine. My cat had a very bad reaction when she had her vaccines in 2010, my vet even recommends she not have any more vaccines except for the rabies. I would be finding another vet, I would not trust him to care for my cat.

Vets are people too, and some are controlling and rigid.  I think it is best if you and the vet you choose can work in a partnership for the wellbeing of your pets.  (I feel the same way about my personal physician as well!)  Some vets do not take kindly to having their ideas challenged, or having suggestions made as to another way to do things, and since you want to be a partner in making decisions, you should find a vet who is comfortable with this.  Ask around and get recommendations from local rescue groups and other pet owners.  It may take a little while to find someone you are totally comfortable with, but once you do, you will feel much better.

Get a new vet. Forget working with him. He's a jerk. Usually if a vet disagrees with the owner about such things, they can offer you reasons why they think their process is best, however they almost never resort to blackmail--withholding unrelated care to force you to accept the shots. Ditch him. now.

I personally wouldn't want to go to a vet like that.  I do a lot of researching things on the internet and I have a cat with chronic health problems.  I have asked the vet about things that I have found on the internet and have never been treated the way you were.  Some things I have brought up she agrees with and some she doesn't.  She has never taken a rigid high and mighty attitude with me, she has simply explained why she doesn't agree with something that I found.  She has usually brought me around to her opinion.

I would write a letter to the owner explaining the situation and all the details of your visit. . Include your very valid reasons for wanting to follow a specific vaccine protocol and how you are upset that the vet did not honor or respect your wishes. Also explain that you didn't mean to offend or cause any problems and how surprised you were by the vet's reaction. You might want to include a brief intro that includes your history with the clinic or past, positive experiences you have had there. I am sure the owner of the clinic is interested in client feedback and it is very possible that you are not the first paying customer to experience this problem or a similar problem. And it is a problem. It is your cat and you have the right to make health decisions for your cat.

If you write it all out, you can organize your thoughts and convey exactly what you want to say about the situation. I find if I try to talk directly to someone about a situation where I have a strong opinion mixed with strong emotion, sometimes the emotions or frustration take over and I later regret not having expressed my stance as well as I could have. Letter writing fixes this issue, and also lets the person receiving the letter know you are serious about the issue. And even if you decide to not send the letter, just writing the whole experience down can be very cathartic.

Lots of other people have written letters complaining about the one vet that has left to care for family stating they were unhappy. The owner did nothing about anything. So I am a bit nervous to do that, but I am thinking about speaking to the owner tomorrow when he is in directly and print off Dr Dodds protocol and show him. Will I go back? No idea yet
