I have an appointment for my 10year old cat for a enema and I'm very worried that it's gonna strees him out to much.he hast had a proper bowel movement since Saturday he had a small one Sunday and this morning. brought him to the vet Monday and he was prescribed lactulose and it really hasn't worked...and now he has stopped eating so I'm very worried...when I try to feed him he licks his lips like he is very nauseous...he had blood taken when he was at the vet and was told everything looked good....is it normal for cats that are constipated to be nauseous and not want to eat? Will the enema help him with that? Im just worried about the whole thing..just want him to feel comfortable and normal again....it happened so fast he was fine Friday afternoon and then he went downhill from there....any advice would be great

It does take a few days for the lactulose to start working. First I was told to give it once a day but that was not helping much so the vet had me give it to her twice a day. It took a while to get her going again even after having an enema. When my cat gets constipated she will stop eating and sometimes throws up because she is backed up with stool. I now feed her canned only and give her Miralax  twice a day in her canned food. Good luck and hope your kitty feels better soon.

Yes constipation does cause nausea.  My cat has had a few enemas and it does really help with the nausea and vomiting.  He needs to eat to avoid fatty liver disease, my cat ended up with that the last time he went through this.  It's a catch-22 though.  He can become so nauseous that nothing stays down that would be the point that my cat would get to.  I have never used the lactulose.  It seems to be a common medication that is given but my vet recommends the Miralax.

I agree with everyone else. Enema will work, and your kitty should start eating after he's all cleaned out and being constipated DOES cause nausea.

I recently went through this with my cat...though she had other problems..

I was told the lactulose takes a  while to work, since it's working its way through the system and loosing up the stool.

Sending many many vibes for your kitty
and that everything will be just fine

The vet can usually give you a solution to do it at home. The enema allows the cat to defecate. He will be able to pass fecal matter and avoid further complications. If you don't want to do an enema, you can try a feline laxative. Never use a human enema on a cat.

My 11 year old Poppy who you can see in my profile photo had terrible bowel problems during the summer and ended up needing two enemas as she was so badly compacted. She had stopped eating also so that's not unusual with cats that are badly constipated.
My vet said to give her lactulose twice a day but getting it into her was a total nightmare. I switched to Miralax for her in September and fingers crossed she has been very regular since then!
