Thank you in advance for any information you can give us. Eli is 3 years old, very large in stature and in weight (He's between 16 and 19 pounds). He's generally healthy except for a chronic nasal issue that just makes him breathe really loud (similar to how pugs sound, lol) and sometimes causes him to sneeze out mucous. The vet is not concerned about it.

The reason we need help is that Eli has this reddened, inflamed spot on his left lip that we can't identify on our own. Here's some pictures of it.

It appears to me that it is actually his inner lip, so swollen that it's showing in the front, but when my fiance first saw it, he thought that it looked more like a mechanical injury from scratching or a snaggle-tooth. The only other two causes I can think of is an allergic reaction to our recent litter change to crystals or an allergic reaction to fleas (because he does have a few). My fiance said that he saw Eli eating his own poop once, and if he's done it more than once, could that type of litter cause this?

What else could this be? Eli is acting normally other than not eating all of his food before it's time to feed him again, which he usually does eat it all. We'll update you when my fiance has the chance to look at it more closely and look inside his mouth, but please help in the meantime! Thanks so much!

P.S. We're trying to figure out what is could be before taking him to the vet so we know about how much of a cost we're talking about. Also, if any of you know of a and awesome and cheapish veterinary office in the Richmond, VA area let us know in your reply! Thanks!

It does look like some kind of ulcer.

Also, does he eat/drink out of plastic bowls? Sometimes cats with a plastic allergy will get swollen lips. If so, I suggest you change them to stainless steel asap.

I agree that it looks like that. Thanks for the helpful article. I'm still not sure, but you gave us a good place to start.

He does eat & drink out of plastic bowls (ever since he moved up to VA with my fiance a few months ago) before that he only drank out of a plastic bowl. I wonder if the quality of the plastic could also have something to do with it, if indeed that is what it is. We'll change the bowls just in case.

My cat broke out with little black spots on her chin and found out she was allergic to the plastic bowls I was using. I changed her dishes and she has not had a problem since.  Hope your kitty starts feeling better soon.

Right, switching to stainless steel bowls is usually advised in chin acne as plastic has tiny bacteria entrapping scratches which can't be seen.  Not that I am a vet, but I am thinking it looks more like an infection from an ingrown hair or something.  Were it an abcess, it would probably have a "head" like a pimple or a boil and be painful.  Let's hope that is all it is.
