I've done a lot of research, on boric acid. Most sites are saying its an effective, age old remedy for cat eye infections, but a few sites say that its not true. I read how to make it with a tiny bit of boric acid and water. Lily doesn't have an eye infection, but her eye keeps weeping green goo. Her eyes are still bright, and no signs of a Upper respitory infection. She was treated for an Upper Respitory infection when I first got her when she was 6 weeks old, with antibiotics. Now, a little over a year later, she keeps sometimes getting green goo. Do I use it at an eye drop, or just wipe the green goo away from her eyes? I'm hoping this will clear it up so we dont need to make a trip to the vet. I'm also wondering if its just left over from the infection last year, or possibly allergies.

Thanks for any and all information :)

Green goo would send me to the vet ASAP.  You don't want that to get out of hand and an infection can do that quickly.

Having said that, my mother used a mild boric acid mix in warm water.  She'd wet a clean cloth with it and wipe our eyes with it when one of us had allergies.  I do not remember using it as an eyedrop.

She also swore it kept roaches away.  She would sprinkle it around the bases of our kitchen cabinets and we honestly never had roaches.

I have used boric acid  (3% solution this kind of bottle ) to clean my eyes, multiple times and I am very sorry they do not sell it in the united states since I really would use it often. Like anytime if some dust gets in my eyes, and often after shower, especially if shampoo got in my eyes. In Europe it is inexpensive and it sold in a large bottle with a sort of little cup (the cover cup) that you fill with the solution and it can be placed to cover the eye and then you turn your face up and the liquid cleanses the eye completely, then you discard the liquid from the little cup and rinse. The cup can also help in keeping the eyelid separate so that the liquid cleans the eye entirely. It does not burn, except if your eye is very dirty then it burns very slightly but that mean its restoring the balance. The link I put it says that its is a generic anti bacterial and anti fungal action. antiseptic, anti-mycotic, and that it is used in eye medication for red eyes or conjunctivitis.  Of course if you do have eye infection you would also get an antibiotic of whatever the doctor gives, but the 3% solution of boric acid is still safe to use to clean the eye.

I would be afraid of mixing the wrong dosage.

I have used Ciprofloxacin antibiotic eye drops prescribed by my vet which only ever intermittantly cured weepy gooey eyes, but had enormous success with Terramycin antibiotic eye cream (Pfizer) which I ordered over the internet.  It is a greasy cream that is easy to apply and stays put.  It has totally cured several cases of gooey drippy eyes around here and I keep it in stock always.

btw: before anyone chastises me about using it, I got that suggestion from this board years ago.

PS. two thumbs up on using boric acid powder for roach, ant, cricket control.
