Hi everyone! :D

My housemate's cat has recently been acting in a way that is somewhat out of character for her. In the past 2-3 weeks, she has started to display rather undesirable and uncharacteristic behaviors, such as urinating and defecating inside the house, eating out of the trash, and begging us humans for food. Up until the time frame mentioned, we had no problems with her and she was a rather nice cat to have around, but it is getting rather tiresome having to scold her all of the time for her behavior, as nothing we can do seems to make any difference. What I want to know is if anyone can shed some light on why she has just started to do it, and what I can do to curb this behavior.

If it means anything, she is and un-speyed female cat, and had a litter just over 5 weeks ago (litter born October 7).

Thanks so much :D

Hi mkh33 and welcome to TCS!

It means a lot that she's just had a litter.  This is more of a health issue, so I'm going to ask a mod to take this over to 'pregnant cats and kitten care' as people there will know more about issues with mother cats.

Hello.

If the cat has had a litter of kittens then her calorie requirements are going to be MUCH higher than they were before. This is probably why she is begging for food and stealing things from the trash. She's hungry.

Feed a nursing mother as much as she will eat as it all gets sucked straight back out of them by the kittens. Make sure she has plenty of water too.

Is she strictly an indoor cat? Mother cats don't want to use a litter box that is too close to her babies or one that is too dirty as the smell will attract other animals. Even if there are no other animals around, her instinct is telling her to go to the toilet as far away from the babies as she can. Make sure she has plenty of clean litter boxes in a choice of locations, this should make her fell safer about using them.

Good luck with the babies
