Hello again everyone,  I'm asking in regards for my 18 1/2 year old kitty name Smokey (a total mommy's boy).  =)

It started about a month ago and just today received even more upsetting news, but a month ago he broke his hind left leg below the knee cap and my veterinarian believed it broke due to bone cancer because it is not healing.  No blood work or bone biopsy was done but today though, in a series of  x-rays it showed it did spread to his lungs and he's not able to give a prognosis of how much longer he'll be with me.  I'll give just a brief history of how my kitty has endured health issue after health issue and was able to bounce back.

Brief history of his health.  About 9 years ago he was diagnosed with melanoma of the eye and only after 7 years did the eye go completely dark in color.  His specialist said within one year his eye would have to be removed, but he was lucky, it didn't spread too quickly and I never removed the eye. Okay, second health issue he was diagnosed was with diabetes and that's been nearly 9 years too, but it has been under control with insulin twice a day.   He's always had constipation problem since he was a kitten and always needed a laxative to help him.  He also has cataracts(due to age), a slight heart murmur for a few years now, a touch of senior dementia and calcification on one of his lungs that never was a problem.  But today, besides that calcification on the one lung, he now had two additional lesions which probably was due to his bone cancer spreading.

My question is, has anyone ever had a kitty cat that had bone cancer that is spreading decided it wasn't it that cats best interest to amputate the leg and go with radiation and chemotherapy?  I felt with all his health issues and his age, I've decided just to keep him comfortable until it is time to say "until I see you again little mommy's boy".  This was a difficult decision, but one I think is best for him.  One more thing, he's bright eyed and gets right up when you say to him "how's my handsome boy".  I don't know how long I have with him, but I'm making every day count.

Thanks for any replies. Blessings.

Oh, so sorry about Smokey.  18 1/2 is pretty good mileage, but I know we are never ready to lose them.  I don't know anything about metastasised bone cancer spreading to the lungs, but I did lose my 5yo this year to intestinal lymphoma - so some sympathy to share with you.  I think maybe by the time it is on the lungs - is pretty far along.

Never been in your situation with that particular type of cancer for a pet.

But I say that if you are doing what is in the cat's best interest, then you are doing the right thing. My senior cat had pretty aggressive oral cancer a few years back, and I made the decision to keep him around as long as he was comfortable - and that I was keeping him around for his sake and because he was still happy, and not just because I was too scared to let go. I had him for 3 months after the diagnosis, and those months were both beautiful and sad at the same time. He was the center of my entire universe for those 3 months and he knew it. In the end, I knew that things were going to take a downturn so I said good-bye. But I did no aggressive treatments (oral cancer usually has a dire prognosis), I just kept him comfortable as long as I could.

Sorry to hear about Smokey. Over the years I have had 2 family cats that had cancer, one pancreatic and the other lung cancer. Cats are excellent in hiding their pain, with both cats we did not know what was going on until their cancers were very advanced and they started showing symptoms. At this stage if it was my cat I would do what I could to keep him comfortable as long as he had quality of life. This is something that you will have to decide what that means for him. Currently I have an ill kitty myself, not cancer but end stages of ckd. I feel for you for I know how difficult it is to take care of and make decisions in taking care of an ill cat. As easy as it is to worry and focus on a cat's illness remember to cherish and enjoy the time that you and your cat have.
