I have a DSL hook-up.

I have all my applications closed on my computer except for Safari - running 5.1.10 version - on a MacBook.

Since the new website was launched I've experienced difficulty with the slowness of it loading, or changing pages, etc.

Right now as I type I have to wait for the letters that I am typing to appear.

When I use my mouse to go over to the side bar to the edge of the window (on my right side) to scroll the window down, my cursor slides against an advertisement that begins with music and starts to load.  This just now happened.

I would like to spend more time on the website, especially fine-tuning the preferences so I don't have a default of the font size - this must be the size of a "3". :)  I'm squinting right now even with my reading glasses on because it takes too much effort to change the font size. LOL

I rarely contribute, or read others' contributions unless I have a lot of time simply because of the slowness of the website.

I know there are solutions, like becoming a paid member, but I don't have $$ to spare since we are living on retirement funds, and feeding, caring for about 21 cats - some of which have special needs.

This website has been invaluable to me so I believe the owner deserves any income from this site that it can generate - please don't misunderstand this - I'd love to be a paying member - not just to decrease the advertising, but mostly to support the wonderful contributions this website brings to so many - including yours truly.  :)

I am just offering this as a consideration to the webmaster - please find a way to speed up things because I am being discouraged in browsing here or making an contributions that I would like to make.

In the meantime - I miss the interaction that I have with the valuable members that have contributed so much to me and help in the care of the cat family we now call our own.

Thanks,

Gloria

I have DSL and I've noticed a slowness too when I go to threads that have embedded videos. It was much better for me when the videos were linked instead of embedded.

Is it just TCS or do you have problems on any other site? I've noticed this past week, both at home and at work, that the site is slower. I've submitted posts, but it's taken so long that I don't think the post is submitted, hit the SUBMIT button again, and end up with two posts, so one has to be deleted. I'm on cable at home.

Make sure your history is deleted. Make sure you've cleared your cache. Go in and make sure all your temp files are cleaned out. And your cookies. You probably already know that. I don't know much about Macs. Windows has a PREFETCH file in the Windows directory and I go in there periodically and clean that completely out.

Keep your mouse to the left of the screen as much as you can. Even accidentally hovering over an ad will start it up. If your mouse has a scroll wheel, use the wheel to scroll up and down.

I have Kaspersky as my virus protector and I run that sometimes as it fixes registry errors and such. Registry errors can slow computers down, but I think they would slow the overall computer down, not just TCS. I'm sorry, not knowing anything about Macs, it's hard for me to say much.

Thanks for trying to provide some ideas -

Yes, it's TSC that I'm finding the slowness - other websites seem to work fine - but then this is the only forum that I actually have any interest in participating - so it's hard to tell.  The sites like Amazon are fast - even with some of my larger applications open/running.  One website that I buy my cat supplies from just upgraded and I am having some slight issues with it being slower than the one that was older.  I guess that's why I believe that the WebMasters need to know about issues so they can investigate and find an issue that they didn't see before. - (I won't mention healthcare.gov here - I bet those folks have their hair on fire trying to get it going.)

I don't run an anti-virus or anything in the background because I know those things do slow down a computer.

Deleting my "history" might be helpful, but as I mentioned before - other websites don't have a problem with the History stored on my MAC. I rarely delete my cache, and often delete the cookies that arrive and attach themselves indefinitely to my computer.  Deleting the cookies could cause some slowness the first time I go to a website after I've deleted them, but thereafter things should work okay.

Clearing my cookies, history, and cache also takes away some of the convenient functioning of my computer, so it's a consideration not taken lightly. :)

Yes, I try to keep my mouse/cursor to the left - but there are two windows that I need to scroll down on, this one, and the Main window this window sits in. :)  Good idea about using the wheel to scroll up and down - I'll work with that idea and see how it goes. :)

It's 12:18 a.m. here in California - and the typing is going like it should - maybe slowness has to do with the number of members/guests on the website?

Thanks, again,

g

I have the same problem with having to waith for the letters to appear as I type, but only on my work computer, Windows XP pro (don't tell anyone that I get on The Cat Site at work
). My computers at home, Windows XP pro and Windows 7, work fine. I use IE on all of the above. So I'm thinking that my issue lies in the IE settings as anytime at work that I click in the "Reply" box there is an "Error on page" message at the bottom of the screen.

This is the error:

If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate hearing them, as this makes me very unproductive at work! lol

Along with having to wait for the letters to appear while I type, the website has been crashing on me a lot lately. I will be forcibly logged out and booted back to my home screen. It often happens when I hit submit (maybe the site is trying to tell me something, lol!) and sometimes it seems random (or maybe I haven't figured out what else is triggering it).

Oops, forgot to mention that this happens on both my ipad and android phone.

Are your browsers up to date? What operating system and browser are you using? There have been problems with Safari - not just here - but updating to the very latest version seems to rectify them. Clearing the cache might also help.

I am on iOS 7.0.3 with Safari. There is an iOS update available, but I haven't done it yet. They take so long to download! I will do it tonight and hopefully that will help. The Android is up to date, though. Not sure what OS, because it is my husband's phone and I know nothing about Android. He is a bit OCD about doing updates, so I am sure it is current. I do know that it is the Boat browser. Thanks!

I also use an IPad and have updated to 7.0.4. I have all of the same issues you've mentioned, but they are happening on sites other than this one. It's much more obvious to me on here because I browse and type more on here, but it is also a problem on other sites. It doesn't do the delayed typing all the time, but often enough.

Eta : I should ask if you are using the desktop of mobile version? I use the desktop version. The mobile version may not have these issues.

Hi, I just now saw this. I actually use both the mobile and the desktop versions of the site. I prefer the way the mobile page is set up, but need the desktop page to use the specialized emoticons and to access my profile. I switch back and forth as needed. The problems happen in both formats, and I would say the occurrence of the problems is equal on the two.

My problems viewing TCS at work are probably related to an extremely high refresh rate required by our software in combination with having to use the Chrome plug-in with IE to view TCS. No problems with TCS at home using IE on my XP pro, but I went ahead and switched to Firefox on both machines. That solved my particular problem (having to wait for the letters to appear as I type).
