Hi, I'm new here and never owned a cat before. Our little kitten has been with us three days and has been eating a mix of dry and wet food and drinking lots of water. We took her to the vet for a check Friday and everything was fine. They said she is very healthy for a little rescue kitten. Last night I got up and Mitten's little eye was closed and gooey and she hasn't eaten today. She has also done two runny poos. She has been drinking though and bounding around and been her playful self. Thanks!

Did the vet do a fecal test on her when you took her in on Friday?  Did he give her a dewormer?  The runny poop could be because of parasites or it could be caused by a change in food from what she was eating to what you've been feeding her.  It's common that when you change a kitty's food, the dry food especially, for diarrhea to occur if you change it too quickly.

The eye problem is most likely an upper respiratory infection brewing.  It's very, very, VERY common for kitties in new environments to develop an infection from all the stress of the new changes...new humans, new sounds, new smells, new routine, new everything!  Keep an eye on her.  Use warm compresses to clean her eye.  Also, be sure she eats.  That's a must!  Warm up some wet food in the microwave for a few seconds. Add a bit of water to it so it doesn't dry out.  Just less than 10 seconds will probably be enough.  You want it to be warm enough to strengthen the aroma of the food, but you don't want it to be too hot to burn her when she eats it.  If she won't eat it on her own, then you'll need to get a syringe and force feed her.  You can usually get one from the pharmacy or a feed store.  Sometimes you can use a baby medicine dropper.

You're going to be a good cat parent!  You've only had this baby for 3 days and already noticed some important flags that your baby isn't feeling 100%.  Good job!

Thank you so much! I'll try all of that. Yes she was tested and given a dewormer on Friday. She's sleeping right now but will definitely warm up the food. I had no idea dry food could also cause an upset tummy. Poor Mittens. Will let you know how she is doing.

I'm really thinking that it's the switch in the dry food.  Do you know what she was eating previously?  You could try to get some of that and do a mix of about 50/50 old and new to see if it calms down the tummy.  Otherwise, offer her more wet food, which is much better for her anyway, and not as much dry food until her tummy gets accustomed to it.  Make it available, just not in such a large quantity, if that makes sense.

Just offered a spoonful of the wet and she ate it and wanted me to carry on feeding her with the spoon :) So cute and funny. Thanks for the advice. I'm very happy she has eaten.
