Hey everyone,
I know this sounds like a really stupid question, but do cats have bellybuttons? My boyfriend says that they do and he even thinks he found my cat's bellybutton. I'm completely ignorant when it comes to detailed cat anatomy, so although this doesnt seem quite right I have no argument either way.
Sorry for the dumb question, but I figure someone here should know!

Hmmm...I wouldn't think so because the belly button is just the umbilical cord snipped and tucked in. I don't think litters of cats are born with umbilical cords attached to each of their tummies. or are they?

I think they do, but I think It's really hard to find, and I don't think it looks like the human belly button.

Wow, I didnt expect so many people to respond so quickly!

So they do have bellybuttons then...damn, my boyfriend is right again! Is there anything he DOESNT know? Oh well, I think I'll go bother my lazy (but so cute) cats on a search for the mysterious kitty bellybutton...

Leave it to Uncle Cecil (Straight Dope) to have the ready answer. I highly recommend that you surf his other intriguing questions, such as "why does Hawaii have an interstate?", and "did the Corrintheans write back?". Each kitten has its own umbilical cord and placental sack, therefore assumption would be they have a belly button. I've never found them on any of mine - they fade pretty quick after birth - located somewhere between the row of nips about 2/3 of the way down their stomachs (or just where you'd expect one to be).

LOL

I assumed so (although never actually seeing one) because of the umbilical cord. Glad to see someone knows for sure though.
