^ or tyres for my fellow English folks

l'm ordering a new set of Winter tires for my car today, and egads!! The price of tires is crazy! They're much cheaper in the States but by the time l pay customs, taxes, shipping, etc, it's easier to get them here.

Anyway ... for the people who drive on snow and ice over winter, do you use Winter tires or All-seasons? Has anyone tried both?

Anyone have recommendations for an excellent winter tire?

We're not allowed to stud in Ontario, so that's not an issue, but the tires l'm thinking of buying DOES accept studs should l ever need to use them.

Our last set of tires was all-season, and I hated them so much that I insisted on buying real winter tires after two very bad winters. Never again. They don't save you money, either, because they're only going to last half as long as two sets (summer/winter).

Clarence, the PT Cruiser, needs 4 new tires, too, and he won't pass his inspection without them. We'll probably go with all-season tires for him; once the snow hits, I won't be driving him that much....he's not a good snow car. (Somebody did tell me that if I would put a good set of winter tires on the Cruiser, he would drive a lot better in the snow.)

lt seems like everyone says the same thing, and it does make sense, since Winters are designed for winter. l just hate the cost, ugh.

l ordered a set of Michelin x-ice3s and they'll be installed next week.

Ugh we just had our tires switched out to the winter ones. Last Fall, I bought the wheels (rims) with the tires because I was told it would then take only "a few minutes" when I bring them in to be switched, but I had to wait an hour anyway. I don't know why tires are so expensive in Canada; I thought our tires was pretty pricey, too.

I've just lost a hubcab so I guess those weren't put back on very well. At least the new hubcaps weren't that expensive, now I just need to figure out how to pull the other 3 off and put the new ones on.

Enough complaining... we usually only get one or two snows here per year. We get freezing temps without snow, too, so the roads can be icy in some places. The winter tires definitely handle much better in colder temperatures, but I don't put too much confidence in them, and we stay home when we know there is ice on the roads.

We bought Michelin winter X-ice tires but evidently Toyo are just as good.

aj, l would love to have 2 cars. A nice car for summer and a huge SUV 4x4 for winter.

SwampWitch, the lady l ordered from already warned me it would take a while. She asked if l could drop it off and they'd call me when it's done
so l think it's going to be an all-day job.

Funny you should mention Toyos, one of the guys at work swore by them as well. They don't have them in Winters at the CanTire around the corner from me so that wasn't an option. And l'm glad you mentioned the hubs since l'm actually doing a switcheroo - my old winters are coming off the black rims and the new winters are going on. l'm taking the original Honda rims with me to get the old winters put on in place of the old summers which are bald. l'll be sure to check the hubcaps are present and secure before storing them.

Lucky you on the snow! lt seems like l plough through it almost every day on my way to work from New Year to the end of February, blech.

Since tires are almost entirely a petroleum product, when the price of oil goes up for an extended period of time, tires go up, too.
