Hi
This is my first post; I'm hoping to get a little guidance as to what could be going on with my cats tail.
My cat is coming up to 5 years old - she is a small (3Kg) Ginger Tabby - she is spends most of her time indoors but likes to go out in the early morning for a couple of hours and pops out during the day for a few minutes when the mood takes her.
Two weeks ago I noticed that she would growl when stroked anywhere near the back end and was holding her tail very limply (she normally likes to wave it around in the air). We booked her a trip to the vets and following a bit of a shave we discovered a large abscess on top of her tail, just where it meets the body. The vet drained it (never want to smell anything like that again!) and we proceeded to keep it clean for a week or so. About 5 days after that I was cleaning the tail up and I discovered a second wound, this time on the bottom of the tail, exactly opposite the original abscess.
This one took the form of kind of an open sore - literally a horrible oval hole in the skin, so a quick trip to the vets got her some antibiotics and I continued with my cleaning a disinfecting routine. Now some four days later the wound is healing nicely.
My main concern is that she is still holding her tail in a very limp manner - it's no longer laying vertically down, but sort of bends just after the wounded area. We are due to go back to the vets to have an x-ray to establish if there is a break there.
At this moment in time I have an open mind as to whether or not she could have broken it - the original limpness and tenderness set in very quickly; but the abscess did seem quite established (I am wondering if the second wound beneath the tail could have been a second abscess that burst in it's own time?).
Other than the very obvious wound and unusual holding of the tail she is walking fine, has no incontinence, no pain in the tail when handled and she is doing all the normal running and jumping she would normally do. She definitely has movement in the tail in that she is able to curl it around here in either direction (depend on how she is sitting). She does not have any issues to her tail being moved - when cleaning the wound it was necessary to extend her tail
I would be really pleased to hear from anyone with experience of tail injuries or breaks and so forth; While we have the situation in hand with vet's visits I like to be as informed as possible!
Thanks in advance
Paul
