I have an 11 week old kitten that refuses to eat kibble no matter how its served to him. Even when it is made into a mushy consistency he will not touch it. So I guess I have no choice but to feed him canned. I feed Friskies, Whiskas, the odd can of ideal balance, blue buffalo, royal canin. My question is how much should he be getting a day? I am lucky to get him to eat a full 5oz can of anything a day. Someone mentioned to me he should be eating 10-15oz a day! He will barely clear 5oz how am I suppose to get him to eat 10-15oz? I feed 3-4 times a day and I allow him to eat until he is full. He weighs 2lbs 7oz. Vet said he was healthy and that I should offer him only kibble if he does not eat it he starves. He told me a kitten will not let itself starve. Im desperate enough to go that route I really want him eating kibble. All the other cats get kibble and canned because I cannot afford to feed 100% canned to 6 cats while living in Canada with our prices.

He'll probably start eating dry food eventually. At least he'll be well-hydrated ;). Anyway, no he shouldn't be eating 10-15 ounces at his age/size! It's when they get to be 7-9 months old that they start eating a ridiculous amount. Teenagers :lol3:. Kittens need 3-4 times more calories per pound than adult cats but he's so much smaller than an adult that the amount he's eating seems about right---if an average 10-pound cat will eat 5.5 ounces a day, then at 2 1/2 pounds he's 1/4 that size, so he's eating 4 times more calories per pound. So that's about right.

How many meals a day is he getting? His stomach isn't big enough to eat enough for the whole day at 2 meals, but if you're feeding him all he'll eat at least 3-4 times a day he'll be fine. If he loses his appetite it's something to worry about, but as long as he's eating enthusiastically he'll eat enough for his needs.

Dry food should be minimal if at all.
Canned better
PetGuard is excellent
Also Weruva Paw Lickin Chicken

Another idea is to buy chicken livers.
Cook up and purée in food processor
They are healthy and inexpensive

I am in Canada I cannot order from pet food direct. Also, I cannot afford to feed a quality canned. He gets what he gets or he starves. I feed friskies, whiskas and the odd can of a few other foods

Whatever you do, do not let him go without food for 24 hours. He could get really sick that way. If he's not eating kibble, he's trying to tell you something! Feed him the lowest quality wet food if you can't afford high quality! Friskies comes to mind.

He's a smart kitten. Wet food is much better for your kitty than dry food. Wet food ensures they are getting proper hydration. Most cats who eat nothing but kibble are chronically dehydrated, because cats are supposed to get their water from their food.

I think you need a new vet. You should NEVER, EVER starve a cat. Cats can develop hepatic lipidosis, a life-threatening liver disorder, if they go without food for even a relatively short period of time. They cannot simply burn off their fat stores, the way humans can. And to suggest this for a kitten is even more dangerous.

The Friskies grilled line is actually pretty good. Is there any way you can lower costs by buying higher quantities? Wet cat food is often much cheaper in bulk. Maybe try online as well.

I cannot afford to feed 100% canned food. So thats not an option. Buying in bulk isnt cheaper here. I just want him to eat 50% kibble and I can afford to feed 50% canned. I dont care if he is smart he needs to eat kibble. I put him in the bathroom with it for an hour he ate a tad bit earlier so that tells me he is being picky

Do what you want to do, we're just trying to give you advice. Take it or leave it.

What food options do you have? By that, I mean what brands?

:yeah: He should be eating plenty if you're letting him eat as much as he wants at those 3 - 4 meals a day, and as Willow says, he's eating enthusiastically. Once he's 4 months or so old, you can bring him down to 3 meals a day. The amount he eats will go up as he grows, and should peak out and come back down between 9 months and 1 year old. Most adult cats need *about* 20 calories per pound of ideal body weight - which, if you'll be providing 50% canned, 50% kibble, should be 1/2 a 5.5 ounce can of food and 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of kibble, depending on the kibble. The higher protein and fat / lower carb, the less of it he'll need.

I got him to eat a handful of kibble himself today. Right now, hes barely finishing a 5oz can of food a day and hes inhaling it when he does eat. I offer him a bowl of canned, he eats it I offer more until he walks away leaving some in the bowl. I do this 4 times daily. The kibble is Hills Ideal Balance Kitten
