I joined today so I'm kind of asking all the things I'm wondering about in one go :D Hope that's okay.

Anyway, I feed my seven month old kitten about ~150g of wet food a day (either two small Fancy Feast cans or one small Felix can - I think it's roughly 150 or 160g, I'm at work so I can't check) and leave out dry food for her to graze on. She usually doesn't eat all that, I usually end up throwing some out.

She's always been a skinny cat, and she's never been that interested in treats. It's crazy to me because my cats in the past have always been obsessed with food and we've always had to watch their weight. She eats her fill and comes back throughout the day, but she won't eat more.

So what can I do to help her gain weight? Since she was spayed the other day she's looking even skinnier (understandable I guess if you had internal organs ripped out...) and I know cats often gain weight after spaying if you don't change their diet, but I'd really like to do something more! After there any foods I can supplement her diet with that will help her put on more weight? Giving her more food just doesn't work as she won't eat it.

She is a happy little cat. Growing bigger (she has crazy long legs! I think that's where all her body fat goes haha) but not fatter, active, playful, curious, affectionate...everything you expect a seven month old to be, just too skinny.

I posted here earlier about the trouble I have finding kitten-specific wet food for her...she gets dry kitten food but the Fancy Feast or Felix cans that say suitable for growing and adult cats are as close as I can find, and I've been to a lot of supermarkets and pet shops.

Cats normally are supposed to be very svelte. Kittens will usually say when they are hungry and need more. If she is eating to her fill, I wouldn't worry. At this age of your kitten, they often look skinny, kinda like when teenagers hit that lanky stage. Has she been weighed at the vet? Do they think she needs to gain?

No, she hasn't been weighed. Everyone always comments on how skinny she is when they see her, and other kittens I know all have more padding. Since she got spayed her lower back area is literally concave and it freaks me out, she feels so bony. And I always give her less than the daily recommended amount because she won't eat more :/

How long does it take for them to gain weight? Ie I got her spayed on Saturday, I'm giving her the same amount of food, and I know that's how spayed cats gain weight...how long until I see a difference, do you think?

I guess I just feel like a bad mum to her because everyone comments on how skinny she is haha. Like they're accusing me of starving and neglecting my child :(

Since she's still a kitten - and is a smart kitten to prefer wet food over dry - you could try giving her a third can of Fancy Feast per day. My Rhys is 18 months old now and is down to 6oz per day, but when he was a growing kitten, he would eat twice that amount over 3 or 4 feedings. lf you work, you could give a can before work, after work, and another before bed. lf she doesn't eat it all, stick it in the fridge, it will still be good for the following bedtime meal. lf that's her in your avatar, she's a cutie!

So you think I should take away the dry food completely, to encourage her to finish and eat more wet food? She kind of switches between wet and dry food at meal times. She loved Whiskas and wouldn't do that then, but since I've been giving her Felix or Fancy Feast, she isn't fussy. I think she liked the chunks in Whiskas and doesn't like the patés or mousses. Fillets of tuna or salmon from Fancy Feast are the closest I can get to chunks but I don't want to give her an all-fish diet. She's gotta start enjoying the patés because that's all I can give her! Unless I give her Whiskas adult food sometimes...

How beneficial is cat milk to her at this age? I can usually find Whiskas cat milk.

Ugh I hate this city for hating cats and not selling their food!

And thanks, that's her, my adorable monster :)
