How to deal with litter odors?

Good God, my cat just used his litter box while I was happily destroying things on my video game. All of a sudden, our room smelled like a manure field! I use the arm and hammer with baking soda in it, but even on the chance that he buries it, it takes 15-20 minutes for it go away. I have a potpourri burner (Out of the cats' reach, otherwise he would get waxy paws), and a fan used to divert it, and that helps a bit, but is there anything else I can do without spending lots of money?

Perhaps the litter itself is the problem? There will always be a smell at first, which dissipates quite fast if it's buried, faster than 15-20 minutes.. more like 5 minutes.

It's supposed to be good litter, it's the name brand, arm and hammer, with odor control, and it's supposed to last longer than any other brand. I think my cat may be eating something other than the cat food, because it wasn't this bad when he was 3 months old.

It could be diet or it could be the litter. Brand names don't really mean a lot. The only time I tried A&H with odor control I found that it had less odor control than almost every other brand/type of litter that I've used. It couldn't hurt to do some experimenting. You don't want to change everything at once because cats don't always take well to change. I put the new litter in one box and leave the old type in all the other boxes until I see if the kitties will even use the new stuff.

I found out what the problem was, he wasn't covering it all up, just most of it. No clue why, though. Is there any way to "Train" a cat to start burying again?

I'd try by brushing litter over the business while he's close by.. hopefully he'll pick up the fact he needs to bury his business.

Though I know some cats just don't cover, no matter what.

Many of our members report an improvement in that department following a diet change and/or using probiotics. You may want to start a thread about your cat's diet, including this specific problem, in the nutrition forum.
