Hello

I have a male red point Siamese who was rescued from the streets of Spain . I have had him now for six months and he is settling in well . When he first arrived he was extremely stressed and we had terrible issues with diarrhea which had blood in . I put this down to severe stress from travelling etc . I started to feed him white fish which he loves ( he doesn't like chicken .....fussy street cat ! ) having been on fish for a while his problems cleared up ( no more blood ) and also to be honest he then was allowed out so could not really monitor what he was doing . I then read that a diet of just fish was not really a good thing so I now have cut the fish down and he is on Royal Canin Sensible 33 .

However he has started using the litter tray again as he doesn't like to go out in the rain ( who can blame him ) and I notice that his poo is soft and not well formed . I was wondering if maybe I should go to the vet or should I  try another another type of food ( I don't think sensible 33 is grain free ? ) I've read grain free could be a good option . Does anyone have experience  ( UK food ) .

Thank you for providing this cat a home. I am not familiar with the ingredients in this food. When you introduced it into his diet did you do it slowly or was it a quick change? Also have you had a vet do a fecal check to make sure that he doesn't have any type of parasites or worms? With him living on the streets and spending time outside it is possible that he may have picked up something.

If you are feeding him canned food have you tried mixing another protien with the whitefish? Not sure what you have available in Spain, but you could try mixing a little bit of chicken, turkey or beef canned with the whitefish to see if you can get him to accept anything else. I would start with a little amount and slowly increase the amount of the other type.

He really should be checked for internal parasites. If he has something like coccidia or giardia, both of which are quite common, all the food changes in the world aren't going to clear up the diarrhea. Take a stool sample with you when you go for the appointment.

Hi Thanks for your reply - you are quite right I should take a sample ( and him ! ) to the vets to get him checked out for parasites . As you point out he could well have picked something up whilst living rough and I should imagine eating whatever he could scavenge .

He just seems so healthy in all other ways so was trying to avoid a trip to the vets .

Our kittens had loose stool and we took stool and it was sent to be tested and they had a one cell organism in them. They were put on medication we gave twice a day 7 days. Their stool became formed and they also lost their smelly poop.
