I am a person who likes to be prepared so before I even got my cat I ordered a 40 lbs. bag of feline pine from amazon based on the reviews. when i brought my kitty home she didn't even like it, i believe she prefers granule types of litter rather than pellets.  -_- so I'm stuck with a huge bag of cat litter that I cant even use.

So I went over to the closest petsmart and bought some world's best cat litter after reading the reviews and numerous recommendations for that. I bought a 14 lb bag of that and she seemed fine with it. But I think its too expensive for the amount of litter thats available and I found that it tracks a lot and not the best odor control and to top it off after about a week i found little bugs in the litter X_X . I've read that its common with corn cob based litters so I don't think I want to buy another litter made from corn cobs.

Lastly I am thinking about trying precious cat. it seems more cost convenient but I read its made of a clay that is really harmful for your cats. Is this true? Also could you recommend other litter brands that arent cob litters and reasonably priced?

Buy some of the Worlds Best Cat Litter, make sure it's the one with the self clumping formula. Litter is costly, so make sure you remove the poops and pee balls best you can to save money, instead of completely changing the whole thing. That's a big big waste.

Edit: Silly me, you mentioned same brand.. I've only got good things to say about it though. It only smells after he takes a poop, sometimes he covers it .. sometimes not. Pee is always covered. Once hes done, his paws are slightly coated in small particles of litter which he tracks around the house, but I imagine that's somewhat expected.

Try using one of the recycled paper litters - Yesterday's News, Cat's Pride Fresh and Light, PaPurr or one of the PetSmart or Petco brands. Remember, Google is the place to go to look up what is available in your area.

Be sure you are looking at the granulated paper litter and not the pelletized ones.

I've used every kind of litter and keep going back to Precious Cat. Clumping litter is only dangerous for kittens who may experiment and taste the litter. But yes, Precious Cat is the best!

If the cat doesn't bury their business, of course it's going to smell. Odor free litters only work when the poo or pee is covered and absorbed.

I second the vote for Precious Cat.  I'm using the Cat Attract version, and my four guys all like it.  Drawbacks are price and weight - I have to get my husband to carry the 40 pound bags from the car to the house.  Positives - low dust and hard clumping.  I was using Tidy Cats and the dust was terrible.  Precious Cat is much better as far as dust goes, and odor control is good (when they decide to completely cover).

Ok I settled for precious cat. I bought a 40 lbs bag off amazon and I don't smell a thing! Also when i put it in the box she played in it. She covers her poo but it reeked still with the other one. Now I gotta find out what to do with this feline pine.

I am currently using Cat Attract (mainly because we will be visiting family soon and wanted to cut down on dust) but an article I read on clay litter bothers me. http://www.moderncat.net/2011/03/06/reminder-why-clay-cat-litter-is-evil/ Many of the alternatives attract bugs. The one I tried from Dollar General called EverPet was cheap but seemed to do more tracking (perhaps this could be remedied by a mat once I get one??) and is also made from clay. And crystals sound painful to step on. Ugh nothing sounds ideal to me.

I am wondering if your local animal shelter might accept the unused litter.

Your local animal shelter should gladly accept the unused litter.

update: i ended up using up that bag of precious cat i bought. it was okay but it was very hard to scoop when it came to cat pee so i ended up doing whole box changes more often. I have found a litter i like even more now that i got at walmart called fresh results, its the generic version of nature's miracle much more easy to scoop so i dont have to go through much litter as often and bad poo smells get neutralized in a matter of minutes. its stil clay though although the granules arent as big.

I use cat's pride fresh and light. I, and the cats, love it. Clumps hard so it's easy to scoop out the urine and it really does great with the smell. Only downside is it's easy to track.

I have been a long time user of Tidy Cats. Recently tried Cats Pride and have been happy with it. So far it seems to be low dust, have not seen any dust clouds when topping off the boxes or scooping. As mentioned clumps hard. Tracking doesn't seem to be any worse than any of the other clay litters I have used. Price in my opinion is good got a 20 lb container at Walmart for a little over $5 if I remember correctly. They also have a light weight type similar to what Tidy cats came out with recently, was only a dollar more than the regular one at my Walmart. The litter is a bit finer, but still did not notice any dust and clumps real hard. None of my 4 cats seemed to mind the difference.
