So I thought Ares, my first kitten, was going to be the one who had the problems - I was obviously too optimistic!

My little guy Corvo has had watery eyes since we got him as a kitten 2 months ago. We brought him to the vet, and she said she thought he had a sinus infection or URI and gave me 3 weeks of antibiotics. While on the medication his sneezing basically stopped and he looked a lot better. It's now been 3 weeks off the meds and this has started up again. He doesn't have a fever, he runs around like a maniac, and cleans his plate at every meal. Could it be herpes? I've started both of my boys on L-lysine (125mg in the morning and another 125 at night) I'm also thinking it could be asthma? But he shoots out pretty decent size globs of snot when he gets like this. Once the big snot glob is out he's good on sneezing for a few days till the mucus builds up again. Any suggestions? My vet is at a loss :(

It does sort of sound like asthma. My Delilah had an episode like that this morning. When she gets to purring a lot, she sometimes produces mucous. However, she usually hunches over, wheezes, and then coughs. It does sound a bit like her throat clearing though, although hers last just a couple of seconds. Did they do X rays? If it's Asthma, some prednisone might help.

I may be asthma, but again, I'm not sure. I also don't have the funds saved up yet for another xray (my other cat has had like 3 done in the span of a 2 week period plus and endocardiogram.) So I'll have to wait.

Doesn't look like asthma.  Most asthma kitties don't have sneezing prior to an attack.  Fritz, the Brave's website has videos of an asthma attack if you want to compare.  http://www.fritzthebrave.com/

I think what you're seeing is overexaggerated swallowing and coughing.  Looks like he has some nasal drainage and maybe his URI hasn't completely cleared up.  You could ask the vet to do a culture and sensitivity test on any nasal discharge or anything draining down his throat.  That will tell you exactly what kind of bacteria you're dealing with and what med will most effectively treat it.  Take this video with you so you can show it to your vet, too.

Increase the lysine to 500mg a day, divided into 2 doses as the lysine works best when there's a steady, constant supply in the bloodstream.  It's secreted out of the body when your kitty urinates, so that's why you need to give 2x daily.

It kinda looks like asthma...my girl Marble has asthma and her attacks are similar to the ones on the Fitz the brave link posted by a PP. But I'm concerned your cat doesn't really sound like he's sneezing but coughing the entire time? He does appear air hungry and has lots of mucus which is common in asthma attacks, but his posture is different. My best guess would be either asthma or something in the lower respiratory tract like bronchitis...your vet should be able to do xrays and give you a better idea.

My 10 yr old boy cat did the same thing. Took him to the vet expecting xrays and a diagnosis of asthma. They gave him strong antibiotics, said his tonsils are swollen and if he wasn't better in 10 days, to bring him back. Its been 7 days on the meds and not a cough or sneeze since day one on medicine. Take him to the vet because it could be a number of things, but the vet said this year is the WORST for allergies. Not sure what the allergy is for my boy since he is an indoor kitty only, but his sister is fine and he's getting fine too. He has to get two teeth taken out (vet found some FORL's while doing the exam) and luckily they found it before it got too bad and infected or causing him pain, which right now they are not.

Please take your kitty to the vet. Better to be safe than sorry, and it may be as simple as a cold/allergy, or something worse that you're gonna catch early so it will be easier (and cheaper) to treat!!

Good luck and update us!

Hey Guys,

I decided to try a few things before hauling him off to the vet, and tried switching his new litter back to his old one. I found that the new liter was very dusty and this coughing only started when we changed it. After I put his old liter back in (much less dusty) I have not heard him cough once. I think my cat just has bad allergies, as if I use a new spray, or soup he always sneezes, I have to vacuum all the time lol. If I hear him start up again I'll bring him to the vet :)
